Minor Soccer League
has lots of action
The Lions defeated the.
Knights four goals to none.
The game, would have been
,cancelled had it not;been for the'
Tee Wee players on each team.
The Pee'wee's for the Lions
were Steve Meriarn and' Paul
Doorly. The Knight's Pee Wees
were Bill Walker • and Rich
Stoddard: • I "
The 'Pee Wee's played very
well against the Bantam players:
The • goaly for the Knights,
Bill Sanderson, did very wall
against the Bantam forward lion
(Lions) and stopped shots that
should havebeen a goal..
The Lions scorers were Kevin'
Meriam (2). Ron Sowerby (1)
and .Paul McKay (1). Ron
Sowerby scored his goal during a
,penalty kick. 'Bill ' Sanderson -
made a good try but failed to
• stop it.
'Sime of the parents are
corning out to see their boys'
play soccer. , We hope more
parents come out to see soccer
and learn the rules. The players
would like to see their mothers
and fathers there .to cheer their
team on 'to win.
- KNIGHTS VS VICTORIANS
• The game started° with the
Vics dominating the Knights due
to a strong wind: After only six
minutes Steve Williams followed
a through ball into the penalty
box and hammered home a'gcal.
The Knights retaliated •with
attack after attack. '
Jimmy Watt had Ta fine
breakaway midway through the
first half, but failed 'td place the
ball in the net.
Bill Nurse had a terrific shot
that he rocketted from 30 yards.
The ball smashed the' cross bar
and went'out for a goal kick.
In._the. .second ,..half, the .game
was very even, with John Grace
blasting the ball, at the goal: It -
hit the cross bar and bounced
down on the line and bounced a•
second time, this time Into the
arms of.Casey Wildgen the Vic's
keeper.
About 10 minutes from the
end, ' Bill Nurse picked a corner
kick,jinked about to beat two
Knights and place' a superb ,ball
past Bill Sanderson (the Knights
goalkeeper) to make it two' nil.
Now the Knights started to
pile on the pressure, but only in
vain. Again John' Grace, the
Knights -young stylish centre, hit
the post from a breakaway.
' Jed De Jong ,almost took
Grace's rebound but was off
" side. •
Through the rest ,of the game
these two teams `fought tit for
tat;„but added no further score.
R-ef-eree .Carl Moller
commented that it was a very
even and hard fought game. '
-Tonight (Thursday) the Lions
