Later when the Auxiliary Steam Plant is . completed either of these plants will be capable of delivering the 2.5 million pounds of 'steam neededto produce the, heavy water. The Bruce Nuclear Power Developrhent, a joint -project of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and Ontario Hydro, .occupies 2,300. acres on the shores of Lake Huron midway between •Kincardine and Port Elgin. When all components are completed, several years-crOtn- now, the development , will include a 3,200,000 kilowatt nuclear generating station, *a %eayyrater.p1ant,a7steam plant, it.Siyirlrlotglt'aint Nuclear Power Station which is already i operation. / 1 A peak -cofl trtiction force tot .400 is at work .on the heavy M centre right. water plant, which wi11....,baxe a production capacity of 800 tons a. year of the precious liquid, vital to' the Candu System 4.of nuclear production bf electricity in which Canada is pre-eminent. Heavy water (D20) which is found naturally in ordinary water at about 1 part -7,000 is extracted from a gas/.water mixture In two sets of ,large enriching towers and concentrated to between 30-45%' deuterium .(or heavy hydrogen). Each set' of the 275 foot -tall towers will produce 400 tons a year of concentrated deuterium oxide when in operation. The 30-45% concentration is then move,d to the finishing unit where' it is upgraded by a distillation process to' 99.75 per cent purity for reactor use. Aluminum clad insulation is nowbeing added to the plant's two sets of enriching towers. The finishing unit which is, almost completed and undergoing early 'commissioning ' tests could be used to upgrade D2O recovered from, operational nuclear stations until the first enriching unit begins operation. Ontario Hydro operating staff is already established on the site and training has ,started.
