In many old and not -so -old
English gardens a most
pictures ue and striking effect
was obtained by paving terraces
' and ' walks wits, stdnes and
flowers.
.. Irregular natural flagstones

beds and used in much the same

effect.
, Floral paving, or flat rockery
as it might be termed, differs in
construction from the ordinary
flagstone walk in ,that one must
prepare a substratum' in which
the types of plants most suitable
for growing in the crevices will
thrive.
This substratum should be at
least three inches `deep and
composed of good garden soil,
and sand and • peat, in equal
quantities. If available, one part
of peastone should be added.
Spread this ' evenly over the
surface to be paved and start to
lay the stones.
Select large flagstones for
where the the 'traffic is' likely to
be heavy, and smaller stones for
corners or areas away from the
main arteries. Test each stone as
it is put -in place to be sure it is
solid.
