The Goderich Signal-Star, 1971-06-17, Page 10
!D.ERICH SIGNAL-STAR,.THURSDAY, JUN 17,1971` ***It's about . time those monsters of 'the seas, who insist on ' dumping their empty suds cans or cigarette packages into our waters, get what is coming to -them. And from now on they will. Waterborne litterbugs whose travels along Canada's waterways are invariably tradeable by trails of 'floating bottles, 'empty cans and miscellaneous refuse, will find their carelessriess costly from now on. New "garbage 'pollution prevention regulations" within the shipping act will enable the courts to assess a fine of up to $5;000 against persons guilty, of dumping garbage into,Canadian waters. To ensure that offenders will, meet their just dues when found guilty in court, the terms of the wording of regulation are clearly defined by law. The regulation states that "no persons shall discharge or permit the djscharge'of garbage from a vessel into Canadian Waters. And garbage is defined as "solid galley waste, paper, rags, glass, plastics, metal, 'potties, crockery, junk or similar refuse." So maybe the next time you set sail from the harbor you'll think before. you dump that bottle or piece of paper in the water eh? After all °it's only $5,004 • but to some of us it's a day's pay. * * * *** o d is it really true that one of the gal golfers over at the Maitland i` ub est Tuesday, night took four swings at a golf ball and missed.all four. he then, turned to" -her partner and asked, "Am I • out? Or do I walk?" • * * * ***And we promise this'is the last time we will bring up women's liberation, men's liberation or 'that bike-a-thon held recently but our lady columnists leave us no alternative. Martha this week refers to the lady peddlars of two Sundays ago and remarks "I don't think this. "stronger sex" have the guts'to go after, sponsors." Well, Martha, 'let it be known here arenow that we men have guts. ,As s matter of fact the way our waistline is spreading we imagine we'd have difficulty with those handlebars getting in the way, let alone peddling for 10 gruelling miles, And Shirley Keller's remarks about us "pouting in our beer" are unfounded and untrue. But one thing, m'am, give us a good ole rum and coke and we can turn the -tears on . a anytime. Round and During Art ' Mart days -- 1Goderich Days — the ladies. of 'St. George's Church have their summer slnorgast ord•eaeh year on the Thursday evening from 5 to 7. This has become a very popular and timely affair, as .it gives the folks a chance to. enjoy Art Mart 'and -Mt ' Worry abo u t supper. Speaking of food and .Art Mart time, which is July 15;16 and 17,, the I{inettes will once again have their ,sidewalk cafe in the park. This year will see more home baking offered for your pleasure with 'your cup-a•coffee and it will make a_ great coffee break for all to enjoy in the great outdoors. I hope you hobbyists are' busy doing your THING for this fine show. You will pnjoy sharing with people who are — people who would like to do these things too, but never quite get around to it. So, get busy. Dogs — dogs ' and the by-law reads: — No,, I'm not going to. give. you the ' by-law wording — it was in last week's. paper, page 2A, but I„do want to touch LIGHTLY'on this subject. We are not permitted to let our dogs run at large within the town limits and so it was necessary to, have ah "Animal Control Officer", The DOGCATCHER — as he is ***And would you helieve, Signal=Star.publisher Bob Shrier wrote ,uth a letter fter, he nd out* about - those high, airmai , "jet r -U n t n'Ow 't`[rem°:. s." 7?6f i `TY awaau.uexsA, #= - W1 file r wing Cut-t-o:tape Breton Islan ,a_eoup.le,Pf ~w eks.ag for a. weekend (slightly lengthened) we were -heading along the coast of Nova Scotia looping for a seafood restaurant when we 'finally • came, upon this enchanting seafood take-out spot. When your dog is running loose and he (the 'officer) spots him, all he has to do is follow him home and hand you a "citation",. as they are called an some. areas, This" small write-up can cost you four dollars, or more'if you fuss and go to court. Your , slog is usually in the. wrong. " Most of the dog 'licence fees are paidr. as the officer has made it his business to check on this item. - since that is one of 'his duties. People 'with well trained dogs ' and small dogs which seldom stray from their yard are the ones who are most upset over a tine. They claim if people` really looked after their animals -- trained and fed . them properly, there would be no need of an "Animal Control Officer". But like most people in' a .small town, the dogs enjoy hlr freedom and want no restrictions as to • where and' wheel they, can travel — and get real snarly about it. People., who' have given up their dogs 'for gardening — or just keeping their premises — object to the dogs using 't lawns and ,bushes and leaving signs — "Kilroy Was 'Here!" You can't blame Them- for cussin' ,and, fussin', since it costs a pretty penny,' now -a -days, ' to replace a browned up bush or small tree. When dogs 'have. .to be tied, it is the, aeimal who must suffer, as it is 'not ..pormal for an animal to be restrained or kept in a pen or' confinement of any kind. Even the zoos try to make their animals' feel at home and most of them have lots of room to run. So I am as upset as you at the prospect of a fine animal being kept under restraint "at all times” it just isn't The kids want a puppy = but soon' get' 'too busy for it "under these conditions. They want a' dog ;that can run and play with .' -them at any time or place and THEY just don't want to have to keep track, of• him as they would a small or smaller child. And, so — who is penalized for the care of a dog? Usually mother. The dogcatcher must be on the ball or someone turns in a complaint about him. He Is criticised -- no matter what he does -- and' in our eyes is NEVER right. So you can't win! I don't know what we can do about it except keep our older dogs under Control and not raise 'any young dogs. "Every' child should 'have a dog" — just doesn't apply these .days in a town or city and soon our children will -not know the love and fun of these fine animals".. . . No one can be more, upset than I about the situation but what can you do about it? Any "Answers"? " I think t ►•1 should call on editor Jack AL ',to: take up the challenge and prove that his men can do as food a job - or better — than the girls in their Bike -a -thou. I don't :'really think this "stronger sex" will have' the guts to go after the sponsors the way the girls' did and it ' takes a lot of grit' to stay with the job once it has started. Come on, Jack — HOW MANY turned out or will 'turn out at the Court. House steps? Yes, ',even without you, the' Blke-a-thon was a big success — can you top"it? Just don't push these girls too far or they_ will show you the answer to the Men's Liberations; Movement. And another thing mostof the "responsible" men don't want to be liberated-- they iberated -.they know when they have a good thing going for 'them! Okay! l'et's not get back to any kind of discrimination.., If the gals can do it can your men ,,tetter them? Re: Jack's bit in p« ST .:' .. --about the broken -bottles-- couldn't battles-'«couldn't we have a depot where We could just ' take the bottles and let some hard working group sort and .collect the 2 cents on them? That would suit a lot of us just tine, as I feel we should crit 'down on the broken bottle bit. Of course, there 'stile smart Alec ' who HAS to throw out a beer bottle as he rips around a corner -= but I don't know what we can do about him. Do you?
