Mr. Editor,
The general public of Huron have read in the Goderich Signal -Star
of Thursday,' June 3, 1971, the very confusing -news release of
County activities by someone who didn't do much homework -on an
edjtorial comment! '
First: The Pork Producers did not hope or believe the remarks'
made in council by two members from rural municipali'ties were'
misquoted. Our main concern is that the grossly erroneous statement
made by Bill Elston, 'Reeve of Morris was not checked out by your
reporter before being published'. If your newspaper isin the habit of
publishing any statement made by anyone, then you no doubt
would, be a -.forerunner in the crowd that followed the chicken
through the forest as she cried, "The sky -is falling down! The sky is,
falling down!"
Second: An explanation of how dully farmers continue to spend.,
spend, -spend; for new cars, 'new equipment, more lan'd,`bigger barns 4
- what would youlhave us dao? Go back to the horse and buggy? Our
'cars wear out like everyone else's,do. We buy new equipment, more
land, and bigger barns to try to compete in a very competitive'
business. Count the number of farmers competing against.each other•
in Huron County. Then, count the iitlither of newspapers in direct
competition with thy'•Gaderich ;Signal -Star. Farmers have mademore
progress in the last twenty years, in units of food produced per acre,
per man and' per man-hour than almost anybusiness or, industry you
- -can name. We have to be progressive - not regressive, Also, many
farmers are carrying a much heavier debt load than they like in order
to survive in this cheap food ,poli,cY being "carried out by our
