Maintenance Still Best Way to C
Six Non -Visible Signals Warn Driver
There's Malfunction That Needs
Correction to Keep Air. Clean
"Where there's smoke, there's fire," goes the old saying.
The same formula doesn't necessarily- • apply to air pollu-
tion. Jiust because there's no visible sign or --pollution coining
from your car's exhaust pipe, it may not mean your car isn't
polluting excessively.
Visible exhaust smoke generally appears when the engine
is malfunctioning. Burning oil in the engine or an excess of
unburned gasoline helps create the exhaust 'smoke.
These are obvious signs that your car is polluting.
However, there are times when an oversupply of unburned
hydrocarbons, carben man- - , . __.,,....-_ -
oxide and nitrogen oxides following should be checked
cannot be seen. If this is the at your favorite service out -
'case, how can you tell when. ;, let:
-your car. i$ .polluting?.
Look for these warning
signs:

C. A noticeable drop in fuel

D. Hard starting
E. Stalling
F. Rough .running and id-
ling engine
These conditions mainly
stem from faulty, ignition,
compression . or emission
control devices. •
Take the case of a mis-.
firing spark plug. A five per-
cent rate of misfire can in-
crease unburned hydrocar-
bon emissions, by 300 percent.
Consider a clogged PCV
valve or dirty air cleaner.
These can almost double the
pollutants from your engine.
In addition, a University of
Michigan engineering school
study showed that emissions
of unburned hydrocarbons
'were reduced an average of
55 percent following tune-
ups.
To make -certain your car
is as pollution -free as it was
originally designed to be, the
tion, an"engine check "should
be , performed every 5,000
miles. Tune-up should in-
clude new spark plugs, points
and condenser plus other
basic services your engine
needs.

Cars of today are 60, .per-
cent more pollution free
than those, of 1964 and in a
few years the internal com-
bustion engine will be virtu-
ally non-polluting: •But con-'
scientious maintenance will
still be needed to keep them
that way.
Autos Dept In Tune
Hum .Clean " Air Song
It used to be when a mo-
t—ppu-lled_.-into a -service
outlet and' told an employee
to "Check the air," it was a
natural assumption to: look
at tire pressure.
Today, checking the air has
an additional meaning. It
means checking the engine
to make sure- the car is not
adding unduly to the na-
tion's air pollution ,problem.
EEven though the nation's
auto manufacturers have
taken significant strides in
reducing air pollution from
automobile engines, the fail-
ure of the car owner to keep
his ' ngine in shape has
hel ed, slow progress.
l or example, studies by
'Champion Spark Plug" Com-
pany show that a five per-
cent incidence of spark plug
misfiring, caused by engine
neglect, can increase the
emission of pollutants by 300
percent. And studies by a
group at the :University of
Michigan engineering school
show that harmful emissions
can be reduced by an aver-
age of 55 percent after a
tune-up. -
HOW TUNE-UP CONTROLS
POLLUTION
Causes' of pollutants are
the wastes from gasoline
that are incompletely
buried. :These wastes are
minimized in a tuned engine.
When an engine is out of
tune, there may not "be corn -
Pete combustion of the gas-
oline/air mixture and a
greater production of con-
taminants is the result. --
Therefore, an engine check
every 5,000 miles and a com-
plete tune-up every 10,000
miles is recommended.
In addition to elements of
a tune-up, there are _other
key items to help cut down
on pollution: the PCV valve,
the oil filter, the air filtel;
and the gas filter.
* * *
PCV means "positive
crankcase ventilation," but
we can call -it "pollution con-
trol valve" for easier under-
standing. •The system has a
valve which regulates the
flow of noxious fumes into
the carburetor so that en-
gines will continue to run
while reducing pollution.
PCV valves should be
changed every -12,000"" miles
or .every tune-up. If a valve
becomes plugged or worn it
is useless. •-- _...... .
OIL FILTER: Smoke -
belching `engines are worn
out. They wear out when
grit, acids and other junk in
the oil enlarge the cylinder
Walls permitting the ehgine
to burn the oil.
The best way 'to prevent
this . polluting wear is to
change oil and oil filter at
least every 4,000 miles.
FILTER: With every
gallon of gasoline a oar
burns, it also .inhales 10,000
gallons, of air. If the air is
dusty, the grit wears out the
cylinder walls, permitting oil
to be burned, which pollutes.
Also, as the filter traps dust,
the amount of air entering
the engine is reduced ... en-
riching the fuel -air mixture,
which pollutes.
So Change the air filter
every tune -w.
GAS FILTER: Grit in gas-
oline can plug carburetors
and cause 'stalling. So it's
also important_ _to_ change
gasoline fili;e1.

that looks something like a

The truck, in actuality, is a

used in conducting Cleaner
Air Clinics for area automo-
bile •service personnel.
During the coming year
close to ,1,000 of these clinics
will be conducted through -
'out tile United States. More
than 40,000 service techni-
cians ,are 'expected to learn
how tune-up or lack of same
affects air pollution.
— Champion maintains a
team of 14 regional technical'
services engineers who trav-
el the country in their spe-
cially -equipped vans.
In addition to providing
technicians with basic tune-
up precedu-res, the clinics
demonstrate how tune-ups
help reduce unburned hydro-
carbons. and darbbi .°monox-
ide emissions. Special empha-
sis is made on the effects of
worn spark plugs, engine ad-
justments and the need for
regularly scheduled mainte-
nance in combatting -pollu-
tion.
SMOKE SCREEN
If you're lboking for an-
other reason to quit smoking,
consider your driving safe-
ty. Tobacco smoke leaves a
dulling film on the inside of
your windshield. The result
is reduced visibility and
stronger glare. If you do
smoke, periodically clean the
inside of the windshield with
a. solution of water and vine-
gar to wash away tobacco
film.
Drive with care, and get
there!

"The clinics_ enable us to

we can help further reduce
