Hef's 'How and Why' of Taking Good Care of Car
Trade-in Value Enhanced the While
Safety, Operational Economies
Are Assured the Owner
By MICHAEL KELLY
Automotive Editor, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Spending a -.little money on proper car maintenance actu-
ally can save' you money in the long run. •
Sound confusing? Actually it isn't, and here's why.
If you have bought a shiny new car, naturally you want to
keep it in proper shape, not only because it is safer to drive,
but because eventually, if you're like most people, you will
want to trade it in. .
A well maintained car, according to both new and' used car
dealers, is worth more at trade-in time than a car which has
not been properly- maintained. In many cases the difference
can be as much as several hundred do leis.
>"We love to see a car that's in good shape both inside and
outside, and especially.tnaintained- well under_the. iood;",said
-one -new. car dealer -"We -give, top-del/at -in tradewi those -cars
and we just don't get enough of them."
There's another good reason to keep a car maintained
properly, and that's the warranty which came with your
,-grew car. ;_ -
While the prd isions of warranties .are different for each
of the major auto companies, and may vary from year te
year, all of them require peri-
odic maintenance to keep the of many complicated parts,
Zit_warranty in effect.. any of .which might go wrong
at any time. It just makes
good sense to have things in-
spected, and minor work per-
formed at regular intervals.
• Watch Your Warranty
This means that ifsome
thing major goes wrong with
your car and is covered by
warranty, you don't have to
pay for replacement of it.
But if you haven't taken the
proper steps to keep the war-
ranty up to date, you will
have to pay for the repairs
yourself — and that might
turn out to be very costly.
In • general the provisions
of a warranty require routine
maintenance at specified in-
tervals.
This includel oil changes
and lubrication, plus checks
of the various parts of the en-
gine, such as the cooling sys-
tem, generator, brakes and
steering.
A modern car is composed
Tune -Up Important
A smart. motorist also gets
an engine tune-up which
includes new distributor
bpoints; spark plugs and con-
denser, at regular intervals.
Generally this interval . - is
about every 10,000 miles.
Tires . should 'be .checked
regularly for proper inflation
and should be rotated for
proper wear, usually every
12,000 miles or so. ,
Many people have their
tires checked, and rotated,
about twice a year — usually
when they put on or take off
snow tires:
Incidentally we probably
won't have any more snow
until late this fall, so if you've
still got snow tires on, the
wheels, it's a good idea to
take them off now.
Keeping the .outside of the
car clean also is a good idea.•
In weather like this many
people prefer to wash, and
wax when necessary, them-
selves..Others prefer .to .use
the services of a car wash.
Car Protected
Either way the finish of
the car is protected and will
last' that much longer and
I look nicer in the process.
If you plan to keep your car
NELP CLEAN
It MR
for many years, and don't
plan to trade it In, it makes
even more sense to keep it
maintained properly.
The little this costs is re-
paid by the lack of major
repairs:
