NFU help picket pork producers'
• Members from Local 335 of.
the National Farmers' Union
helped to picket theOntario•
Pork Producers' Marketing
Board in Stratford on Tuesday,
June 41.' This was to draw
attention to the low price being
,paid to, the farmer for hogs.
Points discussed with the
producers as they brought their
hogs to market were that the
farmer suffers, but not the
vertical integrated feed
companies by low. prices. They
still make money -on feed, while -
the independent . farmer loses
money per hog; , the NFU
platform policy ' calls • for
legislation that • will eliminate
feed companies, packing plants,
chain stores or other
agri-business firms from
' livestock production.
• The price spread between the
,
producer and retail price is far
too great, some cuts over 100%.
Since 42.2% of the Canadian,
economy is directly dependent
on agriculture, ' thewhole.
economy is short-changed when
farmers apcept depression' prices.
This has been • gradually
happening for.years and now the
full impact is being felt.
•
The Ontario Pork Producers
Marketing Board has the power
to set a price for hogs' —NFU is
demanding that,they use it.
