Goderich women ride for cancer
The women of Goderich may be

"better Late. than never In the -lest few
weeks, the- women of Goderich have
accepted' _the challenge td ride their
bicycles for cancer and to date, the
response has'been' niostgratifyi .rig.
Women of al I, ages and all4degrees of
fitness, have signed up for the event. They

Readers ma' have noted President
Richard Nixon's recent:' plea fora greater

tremendous i strides"4 are being made
annually, throughout the world to extend
the life of patients suffering from cancer,
there is still no known cure for the
ailment which claims almost as rxiany lives
each year as heart.disease.

There is little doubt that(cancer can be

11 You 'don't haye • to ride in the
bike-a-thon to ,be of help. You don't even
have to leave your homes. •Just pick, up
your telephones and dial 524-9992 or
524-8331 and leave your name, your
telephone number and the amount of
money you are willing to give per mile to
one cyclist (or more) for 'the ten mile
course.
Then let the girls e who a, doing the
riding do the work—Let them pedal us all
towards a healthier, happier cancer -free
future.
Of course, uppermost iri my
mind this week again is the
bike-a-thon for cancer which is
being undertaken by some of the
women in Goderich. We seem to
be at a standstill' right now with
the preparations 'for, the ride
with no more riders being added
to our list and the number of
sponsors for the' event growing
very slowly. ►
Some' people in town. have
mentioned to the that they have;.
noticed an increasingdnumber of
bicycle riders along the streets
--.- and this is an encouraging
sign. -
We have been assured by Bob.

sponsors from the » Cancer'
Society. We're hoping that more
and more 'peorple will grab hold
.of this idea to support the
Cancer Society in its fight to win
the battle over the disease which
seems to touch so many," many
families'these days. - • ,

As for . me, I've been out
cycling most every day. Maybe
you've seen me on .your street
from time to tine. I don't know
whether or not I'm in shape tb
make the' ten -mile jaunt but 1
must say I'm going to give it the
'old college try.
I'm still , searching for.
sponsors. If you wouldlike to
sponsor me — or someone else
on , the „ big ride—,please
telephone the girls- at te front
office in the Signal -Star building.
They .will take your name, your
phone number and .the amount
you wish to donate 'per .mile.
"That's all there is to -it. We will
get in touch with you following
the ride to make arrangements
to collect your gift. - •
Actually, 'preopl'e' have, been
very responsive to the girls' plea
for sponsorship during' this ride
and we •"are ateful for your
interest'::';;"-
* *
We still have no volun)eers•to
serve coffee and cold drinks at
• the halfway point in our -ride.
Would, you be able to help out
here?.,.

Since-- the column was
written early Friday, new
developments in The Great Ride
have come to fight.
First of all, decision has been-
made • to begin the' ride from
Conklin Lumber's parking lot.
I've actually clocked the route,
from Conklin's to the
Kitchigami si'deroad and found it
to be almost five miles exactly
(just a ee, fraction less
according 'tt talculations)•.
Secondly,`•we- have the names
of a couple of girls who are
willing to hel'fi to serve cbffee
and cold drinks at the half j
point. Has anyone else been
conterniplating assistance in this
form. Please let me know soon.
r And finally, i've had _ a
telephone call from Miss
Lambert at LOCI )rvho tells me

enthusiasm should spur us all on
to get just as marry"• sponsors as
we can for our bike ride so that
we can turn as much money as

Any help we can derive from
the citizens -of Goderich and

appreciated. , •

Young people that the image of
the 'policeman has diminished
throughout t1 e_year's since I was
a• teenager. I wonder why.
It has occurred to me that
-when there is a lack of respect
for parents, within 'a home there
is greater opportunity for
-disrespect for teachers and
,police officers and the clergy
etc., to develop. Would you
agree?
I'm sure that ,the Brownies
and Cubs who were at the OPP
detachment office during Police
.Week have' a better
understanding of the work the
police officer ' must do. Surely
these youngsters will develop
out of' such associations a
renewed respect for the men

police officers have a difficult
service to render .... and do an
admirable job of rendering it.

I amsorry-to observe that the,
local Association for the
Mentally Retarded has found it
necessary to discontinue its
annual open house because of
lack of public interest.
I "realize, of course, that
everyone is busy and that there
seems to be very little time to do
the multitude of things which
are so important to everyday
living without having to snake
time for extras.
But I would wager that many
Of us are busy doing nothing as
the old song says .... busy doing
nothing; working the whole day
through, trying to find tots o ,
things not to

• I noted through the pages of
The London Free Press that the
president ,of the C'WL here, Mrs.
Eileen Palmer, made quite an
'impression at the CWL ,
Convention ' last week in
Windsor. Mrs. Palmer, , who has ,
used the pages of this newspaper
on many occasions 'to' air her
strong viewsconcerning
abortion, gained support for her
motion to submit an appeal to
the federal government not .to
broaden_._.the__ahortioa.--laws;_ in
Canada. .
There' are many, people here •
in Goderich ' who disagree
entirely,; with Mrs: Palmer's
stand. Most of the dissenters use
the same argument as was taken
on Front - Page Challenge the
other night ,.., the one about the
w°, rid being presently
over -populated .. '-new• and
abortions -' when contraceptives
„fail, is a quick, harmless answer
to a problem which could .
destroy us. ' ,
As I've stated before, it is a
touchy question .... one which •
-will not be resoived to the,
satisfaction of everyone. Bu't
certainly • the women of
Goderich must admire Mrs.
Palmer and the -other members
of the CWL who are standing up
for what they believe and
making their voices he`"'' in
many of the right places. -
