it this, way, when you staid' up

If the swing is restricted,

Don't look for those low

On .- blame
farmers for
rising .index
"Ontario' farmers can't be
blamed for the increase in .the
consumer price index during
April," Ontario Federation of
Agriculture General Manager,
'Jack hale said. Wednesday. "In
fact the , price that Ontario
"farmers received for some of
their products deelined"over that
period."
Mr. Hale was commenting on
the recent Dominion Bureau of
Statistics ' announcement that
co n s u mer ; k ,prices ,cla>i bed
.seven -tenths of one per cent.,
Food ' - the second major,
component of the index; —
showed ,an index increase of
seven -tenths of ' one per" cent
from March to April,
"I don't know who, is pushing
up food prices," Hale said, "hut
one thing 'is certain — it's not the
farmer."
"Take hog 'prices for
example. Farmers received an
av'e'rage of 24 cents a pound for
hogs in March. The„average price
fell to 22 cents a pound in April.
That's ' the opposite - of
inflationary.
;`The price that dairy farmers
get for milk held steady ,from
March . , to April,” , Hale
continued. "Right now., farmers
who produce milk for the••fluid
Market are getting $6.18 a
hundredweight — that's, 17.2
cents a quart.
"The price that farmers 'got
for broiler chickens remained
unchanged too," Hale said: "The
average- • weighted. price to
producers was 20 cents a pound
in March, and 20 cents a pound
in April."
"Beef and"egg prices crept up
slightly fro ti March to. April —
beef by less than a fifth of a cent
a pound (choice steers at the
Toronto market sold for an
average of 34 cents a pound in
April), and eggs by 2 cents a
dozen (weighted average: price to
producers was 21 cents'a dozen
in April,lHale said.

ABOUT SPINNING. RODS
Most spinning rods today are
manufactured from -tubular
glass.
They'are' light ' in' weight,
durable, and economically-
priced to suit tire budget of the
average fisherman.
The seven -foot spinning rod
is the most popular, although
612.foot rods ai'e quite 'c'om-
mon. , 1 prefer a (3).2 -foot rod
because there is less roti waver
in the tip during the cast. •
:1s a result, you can achieve
,,eater -accuracy.
There arc two types of' reel
seals `available on. spinning
rods -- the fixed reel seat (fig.
1 and sliding rings ( fig. 2 i.
Fixed reel seats are far moire
common than sliding rings.
Ilowever, I personally prefer a
rod with sliding rings, as it
enables you to place the reel
anyww here you want .on the • rod
handle. This 'is especially ad-
\•anta eous ww•hcn using light,
w. eight lures, In this instance, 1
place -the reel at the bottom of
the handle .which affordsextra
-length and more power to cast
the lighter lures,
Spinning -rod handles are
usually made of cork, althduglh

dles, are often color co-ordinat-
ed to match the ' rod blank
which.. dyes t -he rod an attrac-
Live appearance, Neoprene also -
"feels good", and is easily
cleaned, Spinning -rod. guicles
merit special,htt'ention.
• The butt guide should be
large , enough in diameter so
tha.' the line can pass through
easily without slapping against
the rod. Carboloy:. guicles are .
best because monofilament
line cannot cut through them.
Some of . the better -quality
spinning.' rods are -eq'u'ipped•
vwith• a fly' rod snake guide at .
the butt end of the rod
im.nediately before the handle.
Many fishermen do : not know
the purpose ,of this ,guide, and
make the, mistake' of stringing
their line through 'it: ,This
guide is called a "keeper ring"
and its sole purpose ,is to hold
the hook on your lure when
your outfit is assembled and
you -are not fishing.

problem
is money
What is the farmer's problem?
According ,to one spokesman' for
the National Farmers' Union, it
is a simple matter of dollars and
,cents — too little for products
sold, too .much for services
required, The' economists whom
-the Minister of Agriculture arses
as his advisors have a ,solution.
Removing 2/3 O'L the farmers
from farming is°" "s ipposed to
make it better for the 1/3
remaining. As thousands of farm
families move each month from
farming, those still remaining
haven't had any • increased
prosperity,.
Farmers ate moonlighting in
town in older to stay on farms.
These jobs could be done by
the work they enjoy. If farmers
had snore leisure time•and a little
extri, money they would use
''Ilibireldildrand business would
benefit then too.
