BY NANCY McKELLAR AND MARIANN-E4-KEEF,E, 461C YEAR FOUR GEOGRAPHY • IELD TRIP' 0 ednesday, May 5, the Year our Geography students (461 roup) of G.D.C.I, travelled fro Goderich to Niagara Falls via Highways 8, 5, 6, and the ueen Elizabeth Way. The 'main purpose of the field trip was to observe, record, and. attempt to explain the changes in land, forms ;and land use en route. In • the Niagara Peninsula we were to note particularly evidence of urban and industrial expansion on to. the prime fruit growing land. The following is a summary of SO.Illf of our-obseryations: exceplions, the . areas between urban centres were agriculturally developed and the urban centres reflected this land use in thencribaer feed stores and implement dealers found therein. Between Goderich and Clinton are a variety, of land forms, including the Huron slope region, a sand plain, till moraine, and spillway. The area has clay-loamr.101s and is.. quite. rolling because the-, °til moraine. The area has a variety of ag ric ultuial activities, including beef and dairy' cattle, , hogs, pottltry, winter wheat, spring grains, corn, oats, hay and - pasture. From Clinton to 'Dublin the land form is mainly till plain, With a moraine just outside of, Seaforth. The Soils are clay -loam with some drainage problems. The problem' is evidept around Seaforth Where some fields had been ' 'recently tiled:: The' agricultural activities here were 524,7381 0.• sitpilar to those between. Goderich and ClintOn. The till plain from Dublin to Stratford is characterized by clay-loarn soils. Dairy. fallks" seem to be abundant along. the highway, withbeefcattle, hogs, and poultry of secondary ,tY importance. The growth of Stratford is evident both west and east of, the city where neW services, stOrOs and industrial buildings are located. 'from Stratford to New Hamburg the highway again passes over the till plain of level to gently rolling land With, asSociated clay -loam soils. The farms are devoted to livestock •raising• With beef and'dairy cattle types evident. East of New Hamburg .the • VI • land 'forth ' dominated by a. katne moraine (a hilly, glacial- remnant characterized here by very sandy ' materials). The Baden Hills are an example of such a land form. The remarkable relief of -the hills has been used by man as a site for T.V., F.M., ,and cable T.V. equipment. The drainage of the area' is good, but- the SandY nature of the hills has fallen victim to wind7blow-out in some areas. Dairy farms are common approaching Kitchener. From the Kitchener -Galt" area to Peters'- Corners the soil changes to a hilly, stony loam and bedrock is at or near the surface in some pWes. Less than half the area is farmed.
