TALES (By Doug ...f ariet't)
LONG THF LAKES
BY DOUG GARRETT
In 1965 Pbrt Weller Dry
Docks built the tanker Imperial
Acadian for the Imperial Oil
Ltd.
The 434.5 foot tanker had a
large rudder installed and a.
rn anchor plus- a bow
thruster which will help the
ship' manoeuver in tight
quarters. '
Built to carry 80,000 barrels
of Esso products the. 9,250.. ton`
ship ,was to trade . along
Canada's east . coast and the
Gulf of St. Lawrence.
However . none of , these
statistics' are outstanding today
but' the cost of coating the
ships tanks is a new concept in
the prevention 'of rust
corrosion.
Hang on to 'your chair, for
this price will stagger your, two
,hundred -and , sixty thousand
dollars. However' when you
consider it will save a half
million dollars ' in corrosion
problems, in the next 10 years
it appears th'at the money 'was
well 'spent. It is, even hoped
that the coating of Rust Ban
191 might last for the life of
the tanker.
Rust Ban is zinc and silica
developed by an Imperial" -Oil,
affiliate and .this -was the fl'rst
major application in Canada.
The„ 5000 H.P. tanker can
attain a service” speed 6f 14
knots per hour.
Company officials are well ,
pleased " with the ' money
invested because of the savings.
The crew ' are pleased, because
working in tanks of any kind is
hard work and in . tankers very
dangerous. ' '
