To meter or not to meter
appearsto be the question facing
members of Goderich town
, council these days.
The question arose over a
request two weeks ago from a
taxj company requesting'
.perinission to install meters in
his cabs. . -
At last week'sjsession another
taxi operator, William Swan,
'gave connei.lmembers his side of
the.story.
AW'4"ro.w.A mak,
"According to the paper they
want these meters installed in
taxis," Mr. Swan said. "But we
should consider old `age
pensioners add such who haven't
got the money to pay for these
higher rates."
r •
"1 am supposed .to be cutting
prices" he continued, "I am not
doing this -- I don't have t. 1
see rro: ""meson to put meters in
taxis in a tiAvn this'size."
vJ
He said he also noticed in thea
paper where a referral by
another cab company operator
indicated Mr. Swan's company
was using, "junk" for cars.
"Our cars are not junk," Mr.
Swai d 'they are in goad
Mechanical condition."
When councillor Reg . Jewell
asked the cab operator if the
in>.stallatior) of meters would
affect the cost of cab fares, Mr.

Swan replied, "It would make a
big difference; someone has to
pay for these w meters and it
certainly4 isn't going to be the
cab companies."
Coupc. Stan Profit wondered,
"if, there - was anything to
determine that if .one cornpauy
has meters installed the , other
one has to." '
"1 think,, if we pass a bylaw. it
will 'either be one way or
another," Mayor Harry Worsell
replied.....
to meter still remains the
question. -And it. ,appears that
council members will vote ,on
the issue in the very near future
