Anfh - ;point of view Use fd money` There's been considerable debate throughout 'the- county in recent. weeks regarding the collection of taxes afid the county board of education„this week game. a narrow 7.6 approval to permit municipalities to continue their June 30 and Deet'mber 15 .payments to the board. • The matter of tax 'collections is `obviously one that requires considerable .debate and consideration. `' This .° is evidenced from the fact that had .the board approved collections of only four :or five •earlier, it would have resulted. in'"a savjng of between, S12.,000 and 524,000 to the taxpayers of Huron. . The saving would have resulted in the , fl boarhaving to borrow less money" to .meet expenses. . 'The cost of borrowing money to run municipal affairs is a. sizble figure throughout ""tha county. iMuch of this cost t ` ^.. 7e,art 7 "'r”' `'t 'ic4 „collections. • Howeve!., - many people argue that it Would be.. no great _saving for many , taxpayers, . because if they had to • pay taxes earlier ---they would have to_borrow the money personally. -• t i tt this is It has been pointed out that this particularly the case for fl`rmers. Those dependent' upon cash field crops for their income, would find it _ diffi, cult to pay taxes in the early spring..ra It is Ussumed that those on, steady weekly or monthly incomes would find no great difficulty in paying taxes earlier in -the year. It would 'require some budget r7 changes for many families,; but• it is not as much of a p „ +.lem as if is for„far'rrfers, many of whom receive much of their income in ;the final few 'months of the year. If that•is the case, area municipalities, missed the boat late last fall by not taking' steps to- collect 197.1 taxes early in the year. .Formers at ,that time received tax rebate.,,igr cheques from the Ontario government, It was ',"'found money' 'for most of them, and -presumably could have been used to make their first payment on_ their 1971 -taxes without creating any hardships. ” • This would' have given municipalities almost 25 percent of their current revenue and the ,balance could be collected on the regular two dates, - WRITER WRITES Dear Sir: As a longtime resident of Goderich" (1919-1950) and continuing subscriber to, your paper, I.thought I had sent you a copy of r17" little book published by -.House of Falmouth, Portland, Maine, fast sniffier, entitled ."HEZEKIAH PRINCE JR- Since.
