st meeting. of 70
held for council
The ' iast,, meeting of the
current term of council was held
• Thursday evening, December 17
and lasted less than one hour.
Ail members were present
and a small amount of business
was conducted.
If important business should
occurr "during the time between
now and when the new council
is scheduled to„ take office on
January 11, a special meeting
will be called.
Smaller items of business
discussed included 'a
recommendation from the town
Nsolicitor K., J. Hunter that the
agreement between the town
and the county with referrence
to the Courthouse park not
include provision for the county
to have control of licencing the
use of the park for carnivals.
Mr. Hunter, in a letter to
council, advised a request from
the county asking that an
amendment be made to the
agreement that gives the county
a say in what can be held in the
park could affect the carnivals
held each year by a 1 . al service
club..
The matter was left 'th the
next council.
The Hon. C. S. Mac M ug ton
has forwarded two c 4qu s to
the town, one of $10,e,I I for a
share of the arena work and one
of $2,400 toward the work
carried out at Judith Gooderham
Park this year. The council had
previously been informed by the
Goderich Recreation by,
Community Centre Board that
the funds were available.
Town Solicitor K. J. Hunter
submitted his fee.ror retainer on
work carried out this year and
1969 in the sum of $1,266.60.
The ftew clerk, Harold Walls,
also will be town welfare officer,
lottery inspector and building
inspector when' he takes up his
post January 4. Council made
the - necessary motions and
passed bylaws giving Mr. Walls
authority to act. in these
positions.
Krohmer sub -division
approved;
new policy sought
The Krohmer subdivision was
approved by Council at its last
meeting of the current term on
Thursday, December 17, at the
urging of Cbuns. Paul Carroll
and Ed. Giesbrecht.
T • ,Move climaxed several
wee of discussion of the
project which had resulted in
confusion in council over certain
points.
The Goderich Planning Board
had recommended to council the
subdivision be approved subject
to three • recommendations
including provision of a road
allowance for widening Bennett
Street: There had been some
discussion as to responsibility
for'the cost of the allowance and
with the cost of services needed
to extend existing facilities to
reach the project.
Council decided to pay for
the road allowance; Mr.
Krohmer would pay, for services
inside the project and *the town
and Mr. Krohmer would ,pay 50
per cent of the clefts of
extending the services:
Coun. Carroll, ,'who said he
would' accept - -the
recommendations of the
planningard,. stated he had
examined/the material referring
to the' work, had spoken with
,
engineering consultant B. M.
Ross about subdivisions in
general and he was concerned
about the cost factor on service
extensions to the town, the
developer and the PUC.
"Every time we have. a
subdivision up for approval we
have a different ball game," he
said, suggesting the town prepare
a new plan for subdivision..:
control.
Coun. Giesbrecht agreed with
Coun. Carroll - and moved ;that
the town recommend t6 the
next council" that 4/detate d
subdivision --service, agreement be
prepared and ,: ' no further
subdivisions be -approved -until it
is completed; with - an enforcing
bylaw.
It was pointed out that while
discussions were being held on
tie Krohmer plan it was
necessary to check with the
existing bylaw which appeared'
adequate for what was
happening in 1967 when it was
drawn up, but coulct'no longer
be applied Z when it was
compared with bylaws `in force.
-in-other municipalities.
Council agreed with the
motion and left the matter in
the hands of the' 1971-72
council.
Razing Darr •ay
but' stares will be open
Some confusion has resulted
from the Goderich Signal -Star
carrying a proclamation by the
town stating Monday, December
28 is Boxing Day and an
advertisement in the same issue
stating stores will ry be open
Monday, December 28.
To carify things • we would
like to inform our readers. it is
acLlepted. policy for municipal
governments in Canada to
proclaim the first working day
after Christmas as Boxing- Day,
(Monday this year).
Business premises, however,
are not bound by the
proclamation and many prefer
to close Saturday in order to
give their staff, a longer break
over the -holiday.
Some stores will be open on
Saturday, some will be closed.
Some will be open on Monday
and some will be closed. It's just
one of those awkward years.
The Candy Stripers at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital
have been keeping busy over the past few weeks getting things
ready for the Christmas season. Last Thursday evening, some of
rthem were caught preparing trays' of treats for patients. Mrs.
Trey Ormandy, standing at rear, is in charge of the girls and
helps them with their work. With Mrs. Ormandy, from the left
are: Paula McQuire, Pat Westlake, Etebbie Barker, Laurie
Chisholm, Mary Anne Tevlin, Joy Harrison, Judy' McConnell
and Muriel Yake. The girls, all aged 14-17, are volunteers and
