REV. R. NICHOLLS
Wesley Memorial Own*
Of greater value ...
To whom has the manger
scene not ' endeared itself? And
yet it is not the Whole, any more
than the foundation constitutes
the whole of the Empire State
building. No, to leave Christ in
the Christmas context, however
11*
beautiful, is to appraise the
blossom 8r greater value than
the fruit.
He Who .said I, am the Way,
was incarnated in humanity,
born into the family of .Adam '
the first, to• taste of death for
• every man, as our substitute. V
Having lived a life in absolute
accord with the Law, as no other
man subjected to the weakness
'-through multi temptations, ever
did, and being the "Lamb of
God that ta,keth away the sins of
• the world," the ordeal of the
cross loomed before Him; but
not without ,a Gethsemane
experience. 0
"The third day I will be
perfected," said Jesus, because
perfection while bound up in the
'4 Old Adam, and fallen flesh, was
impossible, even for Him, He
must- needs lay off this
" humanity, Oh' how the Old
Adam writhes thus we see the
triumph of the Will over the
flesh was won in Bethsemane,
thus could he say, in triumph,
*f "No man taketh my life from
me but I lay it down of myself."
Therefore with Christ as our
great Exemplar, we see that the
day we -were "born from above,"
was -our personal Christmas,
obscurely, to be sure, no fan -fare
41 attending the occasion by ,the
world, in fact the issue is 'as
obscure as Christs birth, and
where it is a genuine experience,
.the attitude of the world,
extends from a puzzled, cold
indifference, to outright
hostility. Are there no Herod's
• or contemporaries -in our world
unto the world, and the world
unto ine," fits yo_ur case
perfectly.- At this point again we
can say with our Lord, no man
taketh my life (sensual life) from
me, but I lay it down of myself.
But he did 'not leave us at the;.
Cross either, as a large segment
of Christianity has, but "laid it .
down that He might take it
again; and on that , grand
resurrection moriling He did.
Likewise, the sacrifice of life
that our adarnic natures: lust
after buried like the "grain of
what" will absolutely spring
forth in a new abundant life, no
longer clammering after the
weak and beggarly elements. of
this world, but hensefQrth,
"seeking those things which are
abt ve:"
As once again we celebrate
Christm •may it 'be an occasion
of true adoration, sensed in a
new and living way, as that,
known only by those who can
say, I know, because I have been
there. Thus may , the Light that
guided the 'se men, guide you
all thro every crisis, until the
treasury ' of your life- has been
presente wholly to Him.
A very Merry
Christmas to All
Two faces Godeiich residents. may be seeing around `town in
the near future belong to two young missionaries with the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, better known as
the Mormon Church: The men, Elder Dennis Frie, left, and
Elder Bart Hess, will be.'returning visits made by local people
to the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City and to booths at
Exposition in various areas of the world. They also will be
making calls on people in their h6mes -with* information
concerning their church. Information articles on the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be carried Ili the
Goderich Signal -Star as an interest to our readers as the articles
become available. The missionary work of the Mormon Church
is carried out by young people on a voluntary basis for two
years during which time they receive no pay and no financial
support. Anyone wishing to contact the two men may reach
them in London at .1624 Haig Street or by telephoning
451-9139.

CHRISTMAS tells us that
God reigns and in spite of
world-wide anxiety and fear,
Christ has power to. make .this a
World of Justice, Peace and
Goodwill.
.. This is our Mission today.
The ' very, heart of the - MAY HIS BLESSING AND
Christmas Gospel - is that God
came to us Himself: "The Word
Was made flesh, and dwelt
among us"; " -
This is the glory and wonder
of Christmas.
Our social - festivities and
family gatherings all have their
.rightful. place at Christmas, but
for all dedicated Christians, the
-soul and centre pf Christmas
• must be, at the altar, where
Christ Himself comes to keep
Christmas.with us.
CHRISTMAS draws us nearer.
to Jesus and so nearer to each
other and to all fellow men of
whatever race or kind or colour.
CHRISTMAS brings courage
and comfort to homes in which
there is trouble or sorrow.
