44,
The whole world sings at Christmas, and this
is especially true in England where the "waits''
go from door to door. Lighted candles placed
on window sills have sparkled : out the signal for
a song. And into°the night voices strong and clear
ring, out on city streets and country roads„ Legend
tells,i `us that the lighted, candles welcome the
wandering- Christ Child too. And any- wayfarer
who seeks warmth and shelter on this Christmas
Eve is welcomed in the Christ Child's name. Hot
coffee is ready for the "waits" and cakes are
served to them.

The fire, with well -dried Togs supplied,
Went roaring up the chimney wide;
Then came the merry'masquers
And carols roared with blithesome din.

Wigilia or Christmas. Eve has come to Poland
when the first star appears high in the: sky. Prayers_.
are said, and the bChristmas feast begins. For
good fortune in the year ahead there must be an
even number of people at the table, and always
a chair is drawn for the Holy Child. Oplatek, a
thin white wafer which has been blessed by the
church and marked, with scenes off the Nativity, is
4roken by the hostess and shared ith every other
person '.it the table as a symbol of love and peace.
After ciinner carols are sung as the mother gently
rocks her child in the cradle.
An9els acre racking thee r ,
Gently in slumber,
Bringing thee gifts, -dearest Babe,
Without number..
