A recent report by the
Dominion Bureau of Statistics
points out that every Canadian
Owes an average of $387.00 in
Consumer credit. Such a sum
would be considered a
downright budgeting disgrace to
Canadians of only a few
generations ago; and perhaps a
little sinful to boot.
Actually, the average debt is
even .higher because monies
owing to oil companies and for
credit union loans are not
included in the, total, which
amounts to a whopping
$8,500,000,000.
Credit -buying, then, is
obviously socially and
economically acceptable.
Indeed, our manufacturing
industries largely depend on
credit buying to move their
products. And 'jobs are
•s u b se quently assured• for
thousands of Ontarians.
One way to look at credit
buying is that every time a
responsible borrower takes out a
loan for a needed item, he or she
is voting confidence in the
economy and their own abilities.
Conversely, too much easy
credit can ‘be . inflationary. And
- there is the danger of families
over -extending themselves. In

This is the time of year when
the annual festival of Christmas
lights.. brightens the streets,
offices, plants and homes in
-many countries around the
world.
But, as Ontario Hydro's
electrical inspection department
warns, a word of caution can
save headaches and possible`
danger, with home lighting.
Probably the most frequent
• accident 'arises from confusing
-the uses of outdoor and indoor
lighting sets. Putting indoor sets
outside the house can result in
cracked . insulation and rapid
weathering with the consequent
possibility of electrical shock
and fire.
It's often false economy to
try to make home repairs to
low-cost Christmas lights.
Splicing or taping of worn wiring
pet always a saving. If the set is
in first-class condition, use it
again. If it calls for home repairs,
be sure you are an expert or you
may be sorry.
One reason ,for • the good
reputation enjoyed by Canada's
electrical industry is the
• establishment of the CSA seal on
equipment which means it has
passed the tests by the Canadian
Standards Association. One final
note — be sure to turn out the
Christmas tree lights before
going to bed. And a happy
Christmas.
this regard, it is encouraging to
see that courses on the wise use
of credit are being seriously
considered for inclusion in social
science studies in Ontario
Schools.
The bulk of today's credit
buying, is done witff those
familiar plastic cards that first
made ',Lek appearance in •
number about 10 years ago.
Instant cash, they are sometimes
called ... but beware the day of
reckoning!
Careless use of credit cards
can easily lead to serious
Children always

personal debt. But carefully
used, they can make the best use
of your money. Used wisely -- at
sales for instance -- credit cards
are a useful family financial tool.
The danger, of course, is
impulse buying. It's as easy as
falling into.' debt to charge a --
purchase, but the bill will—
faithfully arrive the following
month.
To prevent unpleasant
surprises, it is worthwhile •
keeping a list of the amounts
charged to your account. And
When disasters strike around
the world — ° droughts,
earthquakes, floods, or
hurricanes — the ones who suffer
most are infants and young
children.
Always ready to provide
emergency aid - no matter
where needed — is The Canadian
Save The Children Fund.
CANSAVE is ' currently
conducting an appeal to reach a
campaign fund goal of
$1,750,000.00, so that it may
continue its vital work with the
world's children in this its 50th
anniversary year — a year not of
celebration but of expanded
service.
In recent months CANSAVE
has provided disaster aid for
children in Yugoslavia, Morocco,
Rumania, Turkey, Peru and -
Sicily, and -most recently Jordan..
Foad and medical supplies,
tents and clothing .have been
moved immediately into the
stricken zones to assist children
and their families in the difficult
job of re-establishing normal
living conditions.
"As the Canadian member of
the International Union for
Child Welfare and in
co-operation with other
international agencies, we • are
able to give meaningful help in
those parts of the world that are
struck by natural and man-made
disasters," states Kenric R.
Marshall, National Director of
CANSAVE.
In those hard and difficult
days and weeks following a
disaster, this help can make the
difference- between life and
death for the children • and
families in the emergency zones.
, "We must maintain this
capability to provide emergency
aid when it is needed. And we
must maintain our other projects
in 26 nations around the world
for needy children., We can only
do this through the generosity of
Canadians helping us,,, ,o meet
our campaign fund objective of
$1,750,000.00. We have
promises ..to 'keep," concludes
Mr. Marshall.
check your • bills when you
receive them. Computers make
mistakes.
Because credit cards are
instant cash, they deserve the
same safekeeping. Never leave
them in glove compartmepts or
at other locations where they
can be easily removed. If you
make limited use of your credit
card, check frequently that you
still have it.
When a credit card is lost or
,stolen, notify the issuer
immediately by registered mail.
One of the greatest dangers of
credit cards is that the holder
assumes legal responsibility for
all debts incurred in their use,
whether or not authorized. •
So if you receive unsolicited
credit cards in the " mail for •
which you have no use, destroy
or mutilate them immediately.
And if you feel strongly about
receiving credit cards you
haven't asked for, by all means
return the mutilated card to the
sender ... along with your
comments!
