Huron County library
Shipments of new books are
received ...weekly in Huron
County Public Library. This
week's shipment includes the
following:
Islands in the Stream, by
Ernest Hemingway. Scribner,
1970.
Hemingway's familiar themes
of the virile artists hunger for
self -realization and man's need
to test his manhood against the
dangers of land and sea reappear
in this posthumous novel.
Thomas Hudson,
painter -protagonist of the book's
three sections, father of three
sons from two marriages, is the
author -artist ., thinly disguised.
The scene shifts from offshore
Bimini in the ,1930's to Cuba
- and at sea in World War II.
Criticisms of"the book's literary
merit vary, but readers of
Hemingway's books will want to
' read Islands in the.Stream.
My Friend the Swallow, by
Jane Duncan. Macmillan, 1970.
Another "My friend" story
by Jane Duncan will delight her
feminine following. This is a
wise story of the lives of Janet
Sandison, her husband Twice
Alexander" and a young girl
"very small with fragile birdlike
bones..." Sadness, gaiety and
warmth pervade this story set in
the Caribbean.
'Angela Thirkell Omnibus,

Angela Thirkell's most
celebrated Barsetshire novels,
long out of print, have, rmally
been reissued in an omnibus

narratives, made more endearing
still by grace, wit and
equanimity.

Huron library buys
world's prettiest, book
The economic atlas of
Ontario published by the
University of Toronto Press for
the Province of Ontario has been
chosen "the most beautiful book
in the world" in competition
with volumes published in any
country in 1969., Twenty-seven
countries were , represented. It
received the • only gold medal
awarded this year at the
International Book Fair in
Leipzig, Germany - the highest
international design. award.
The atlas is especially
commended to all those who
'would probe deeper into the
economic, geographic and social
structure of Ontario. Although
its appeal will be to teachers,
administrators, businessmen and
researchers, its information and
.its unusual maps reproduced in
up to 12 colours will ' be of
interest to all residents. -- of
Ontario.
Population distribution,
structure 'of- manufacturing,
resource industries; agriculture
and recreation are but some of
the economic factors covered by
maps and bi-lingual text.
In view of its cost, only one
copy was acquired. The Atlas
may be consulted at any time in
Huron County Public Library
offices in the Court House,
Goderich.
Conestoga College plans
December open house
The Technology Division of
Conestoga College of Applied
Arts and Technology, Doon
Centre, is sponsoring an Open
House at the College Friday and
Saturday, December 11 and 12.
"Many, industries in this area
know little about the methods
and equipment used in teaching
• the technician and technology
programs at the College," said
Alan P. Tonkin of the
Technology Division. "They are
-also unaware of the facilities
'here which they couldutilize."
A great many students who
come to the College have the.
a
impression that the courses
offered,
in the Division are
Mickey , Mouse in content. It
comes as quite a shock to some
of them when they find out how
rigorous the courses are.
• For this reason, High School
students and teachers have also
been invited to the Open House
along with industries and the
public.
"It will be up to our
radualting student tc ghow how
competent the " Technology
Division is at training
Technicians and Technologists."

Your teeth may
get plastic armour
Plastic paints to prevent
`cavities on the biting surfaces of
teeth are being tested and the
method is so far proving
practi cal.
In . experiments with one
particular resin, an 86 per cent
reduction in tooth decay was
achieved after one year. This
material, however, was
somewhat difficult to apply and
sometimes became dislodged.
A newer, thinner material is
being tested now, which is quite
easy to use, requires no drilling
and has adhered to the teeth for
more than a year in preliminary
testing.
It is painted on much like nail
polish, but does not harden until
exposed to an ultra -violet .Uhtr
When exposed to an ultra -viola

adhesive changes immediately
Don't use
just .any
old toothbrush
The, bristles of a toothbrush
are the most important factor in
selecting for your individual
needs, ,
°Hard bristles are best for
those who. have healthy, strong
'gums. Soft -gummed people
should use a medium -textured
brush, to stimulate and improve
tissue tone, so should those who
have to clean crowded or
crooked teeth.
Those • who suffer from
bleeding' gums should use , a
multi -tufted or soft brush, which
also can be used for stimulating
poor gums, cleaning such
appliances as bridges and for
those whose mouths are still
sensitive from recent oral
surgery. <.
Electric toothbrushes give the
.gums better stimulation, but the
ordinary hand brush is just as
effective a cleaning tool.
However, both are' almost
useless, unless a proper brushing
technique is used — and
frequently.
The trim of the brushing'head
should be straight as there is
*more chance of injury to gums
with uneven bristles. Heads with
five or six tufts in length and
two or three wide produce the
best results. A large brush
doesn't reach all areas of the
• mouth adequately while a small
one doesn't -do enough. Head
length should cover three teeth.
The handle of the brush
should be straight and aligned
with the head. Both natural
bristles (swines' hair) and nylon
do the job, but natural bristles
absorb water and shouldn't be
used for consecutive brushings.
Two or three of these should be
used
into a hard, smooth, nearly
invisible film.
If its effectiveness is
confirmed, dentists and
hygenists could readily treat
large numbers of children. After
cleaning, this painless procedure
could eliminate the need for
cutting out pits and fme fissures
on newly erupted . teeth- and
replacing them with fillings. This
means that dentists could be
freed from an overload of
children's fillings to enable them
to do more on diagnosis and
treatment - of difficult dental
problems.
It could also be a boon to the
handicapped who cannot brush
amtteetb,,or submit to a long

dentist's°chair r
and nth. to
those who live in areas where
dentists are relatively scarce.

BEST SELECTION
OF THE YEAR
My Fellow Citizens:
The election is over, you have shown your support for my
challenger, and he has successfully , carried the polls to
victory. I accept your decision without question.
extend to Mr. Worsen my .wishes for good luck in the
''wiring term of office in this most important position in your
municipal government.
I have been most fortunate to be your' mayor for the past
four years and the pride that. I ;,have for this position and for
the accomplishments of the past four years are unforgettable
for me. -
It has been a great honor for me to serve the people of
Goderich and I leave this position with regret, not so much
with personal regret as with -regret for this tremendous
community which has such vast potential. For four years
there has been enthusiastic industrial and tourist promotion
in this tovvn and this, regretably, must come to an end -nova --
'that you have given your mandate to a man who has always
opposed these promotions.
My sincere thanks,to all who helped me in any way during -
this election, it was deeply appreciated. -
Sincerely,
Dr. Frank Mills
