Co railway construction and
became chief engineer of the
main line of the Grand Trunk,
Railway between Montreal and
Island Pond, which was -then
called the St. Lawrence and
Atlantic Railway. He resigned
this position in 1853 and
organized • a company, in
partnership with Sir Alexander.
Galt, the Honourable L. H.
Holton and Sir David
MacPherson, This company
constructed the Grand Trunk
main line from Toronto to
Sarnia. On: its corhpletion in
1857, Galt and Holton withdrew
from .the firm and the two
remaining partners continued
operations as ' railway
contractors. Amongst other large
contracts, they constructed the
lines between Port • Huron and
Detroit, and London and St.
Mary's. The Growski firm also
successfully completed
construction of the international
bridge across the Niagara River
at Fort Erie in 1873.
Subsequent to 1873 Casimir
practised on his own account
and was frequently consulted by
the Dominion Government with
reference to railways and
harbours, having amongst other
projects been called upon to
report on the enlargement of the
Welland Canal and the Baie
Verte Canal.
Growski's keen interest in all
matters pertaining to his own
profession was frequently
demonstrated, and with several
other leading Canadian
engineers, he established the
Canadian Society of Civil
Engineers (The . Engineering
Institute of'Canacta) in 1887. He
held office as President of this
society from 1889 to 1891.
During his presidential term he
end owed the well-known
"Growski" medal for the 'best
paper presented by one of its
members dealing with an
engineering problem important
to the progress of science. This
medal is still given by the
Engineering Institute and is a
coveted award among Canadian
engineers. '
From the time of his first
arrival in Canada, Growski had
taken a keen interest in
Canadian military matters. In
.1873 he was appointed
Lieutenant-Colonel of the
Central Division of Volunteers in

Convinced that one of the
indispensable elements in militia
training was marksmanship,
Growski instituted a movement
to develop throughout Canada
an interest in rifle shooting,
Towards the end of the 1860's
he was active in the formation of

greatly to education in Ontario.

Fire safety a must
during festive holiday
Fire . safety precautions
should head the list of every
sensible family's preparations for
Christmas, says Fire Chief, Ted
Bissett, in a seasonal warning
that a happy Christmas can
change in a few seconds into a
family tragedy, in homes where
such precautions are neglected.
The Fire Chief urged the public
to exercise special care in the
setting . up and decoration of
Christmas trees, and drew
attention to the following
points.
If plans call for a natural tree,
it should be bought fresh and
green, and kept outdoors or in
an unheated garage before being
brought into the home. for
decorating. Then, one or two
inches should be cut diagonally
from the butt, and the tree
should be set up with the butt in
water, which should, be
maintained above the level of
the cut.
Check strings of electric lights
carefully for worn insulation,
broken plugs or loose bulb
sockets. Only CSA -approved
lighting sets and only
non-flammable decorations
should be used. Declare the tree
a. no -smoking area, and keep
matches out of the hands of
children.
PORK: Supplies will be
plentiful with prices remaining
at low levels.'
BEEF: Prices may strengthen
some.
EGGS: Plentiful supplies at
steady prices.
POULTRY MEAT: Broiler
and roaster chicken will be in
plentiful supply at, moderate
prices. Turkeys of all weights
and geese will be in adequate
supply at firm prices.
CHEESE: Prices for cheddar
cheese are expected to increase,
reflecting a strong demand.
APPLE...S Supplies
significantly lower than last year
and prices will be slightly higher.
POTATOES: 'Supplies are
larger than last year at this time
and prices will continue at about
the same level.
CARROTS: Some of this
year's supplies are not yet
accounted for but the crop,
appears to be smaller than last
year. Prices however" may not
w advance much higher for the
neXt month.
ONIONS: Storage stocks are
much higher than last year in
. eastern 'Canada. Prices there may
continue low with some hope. of
increase in the next month or so:
, Do not allow discarded gift
wrappings to accumulate under
the tree. Dispose of them as
soon as gifts are opened. Even a
green tree will burn if ignited by
burning paper around the Base.
Set up the tree away from
heat sources such as fireplaces,
TV sets or radiators. Do not
allow it to block access to doors
.or windows in the event of fire.
Switch off tree lights at bedtime
or when leaving the house.
Fire Chief Ted Bissett points
out that tests have proved that
the safest tree is a tree with its
butt set in water. However, if- a
tree has dried out before it is set
up; it cannot regain its safe
moisture level. A dry tree can be
ignited by a single match, to'
burn violently to a charred state
in a few seconds.
Even artificial trees can be
serious fire hazards. Metallic
trees are conductors of
electricity, and should not be
decorated with strings of lights,'
but illuminated with floodlights.
Some plastic trees, made from
styrene materials, are flammable,
unlike those made from -
polyvinylchloride.
All trees should be removed
from the home as soon as
possible after the Christmas
celebrations.

technicians and in this regard he
lobbied 'for the establishment of
a School of Mines at the
University of Toronto. Active in
education administration,
Growski served as a financial
adviser to the University of
Toronto and was on • the
University Senate from 1873 to
1893. Moreover, he was
instrumental in the founding ,of
Wycliffe College and his strong
religious beliefs and
administrative ability in the field
of finance had much to do with
the success of this college In its
formative years.
Increased ' concem about' the
preservation of the natural
beauty of the surroundings of
Niagara Falls prompted the
creation, of the - Niagara Falls
Parks Commission by the
Ontario Government, and
Growski was appointed its first
chairman, a post which he held
from 1885 to 1893. He entered
on this very exacting job with
his usual energy and efficiency
and had much to do with the
practical work of laying out and
designing the park grounds
(Queen (Victoria Paris). As a
result, - an exceedingly well
planned and beautiful park along
the Canadian side of the Falls
now forms a fitting background
for this great natural marvel.
On July 2, 1890, Growski
was made Knight Commander of
the Distinguished Order of i,St.
Michael and Saint George in
recognition of his many services
in the fields of engineering,
defence, and education. In 1896
he was appointed Administrator

this post -he exercised the formal
functions of the . Lieutenant -
Governor of the province during
the period between the death of
Sir George A. Kirkpatrick 'and
the appointment of Sir Oliver
Mowat in 1897.
Sir Casimir Growski died at
his residence "The Hall" on,
Bathurst Street, Toronto on
August 24, 1898. His career was
remarkable and unique and he
must be classed in the first rank
of Canadian engineers. Few men
have played such a useful and
influential role in so many
different spheres of Canadian
life. Engineering, military affairs,
education, industry and finance
all felt the impact of his
powerful personality and keen
mind.
