Casimir Growski was born at
St. Peteisburg, Russia on the 5th
of March, 1813, the son of
Count Stanislaus ` Growski, a
" Polish. nobleman and officer in
the Imperiaj Guard.
The youth, like many other
members of his lass in Poland, .
was early marked out by his
father for a military and
professional career. At the age of
nine he was sent to the Lyceum
of Krzemieniec, a famous Polish
educational institution of the
period. Here he studied
surveying, mathematics, science,
languages, and allied subjects
which were to be so useful to
him in his future engineering
career. At the age of seventeen,
Growski graduated from the
Lyceum and in that year
obtained a commission in the
Imperial Russian Engineers.
By this time, anti -Russian
agitation in Poland was high, and
the plans of• patriotic citizens

were' 'ronglq influenced by
events. in Western Europe. The
year 1830 witnessed political
upheavals in various nations
livelihood- by teaching German,
French and Italian, and by giving
lessons in- drawing and fencing.
' In 1834 he moved to
Pittsfield in Western
Massachusetts about 100 miles
north of New York. Here he

the Bourbons in France, the M
was admitted to the
Massachusetts Bar, and practised
as an .advocate in Pennsylvania.
In 1841 he • abandoned the
practice of law, and moving to
Toronto, obtained a position in
the Department of Public Works
as Superintendent of Roads and
Waterways. in the -.tendon•
District of . Upper' Canada.
Growski's first activities in the
department were concerned with
the construction, rebuilding, and
improvement of the province's
roads, highways, and bridges in •
his region of the province.
'Among his many engineering
accomplishments while
employed by the Department of
Public . Works were: a bridge
across the Thames River near`"
London; considerable.
improvement both in planking
and macadamizing on -Dundas
Street between ' Toronto,
Hamilton, and London;
improvement of the. harbours at
Rondeau and Port Stanley;'and
supervising the construction of
bridges across the Otonabee
River at Peterborough and the
River Rouge on the highway
from Toronto to Kingston. It
was around this period he had a
home in Goderich.
His period of service with this
department had been highly
valuable and useful from his
personal standpoint. It had
firmly established him
Canada, giving him experience in
many different branches of
engineering and gained him a
