How to stay even The jolly season that provides 10,000 delectable reasons for gaining weight is just a jingle bell' away. And, as always, hundreds of thousands of Canadians have probably forgotten the tough resolution they made last year as they pushed themselves away from a still laden table, groaning that they had eaten too much. The resolution, was that ' they would never stuff themselves again. Faced . with traditional Christmas goodies, however, and too much time on their hands; they probably will eat theinselves to an alarming weight gain and feel uncomfortable over the holidays. This will be the pattern for most people, but not for Ruth Morning, Al Smith, Gloria Bedali and Bill Hawkins, the Toronto foursome who have lost more than 400' pounds between them. Following the laws of Weight Watchers of Ontario, they gradually lost mountains of ugly fat and intend to keep it off, even during the season of temptation. Weight Watchers is an organization that helps, people shed extra weight by teaching them healthy eating habits. Here is how they will face up to Christmas. Ruth, 51, and a Toronto grandmother, who lives at Replin Road, shed 102 pounds in 141/2 months. She started the , Weight Watchers program on May 7, 1969, and . finished on July 22, 1970. She is now two pounds under her goal. Last year she gained six pounds during Christmas. This year she is at her desired weight and intends to stay there. She says: "Don't give in to temptation. One treat becomes two and before you know it, you are gorging yourself and your weight is skyrocketing." "When I was - fat you wouldn't have noticed an extra five pounds; now you notice it immediately. At my weight; Christmas shopping is much more fun. He's looking forward to Christmas and to buying new clothes. - He says: "I'll never let myself get into that condition again. My passion used to be pizza but now I like Weight . Watchers Chinese-style food vegetables cooked in soya sauceand mock potatoes made from whipped cauliflower. "If I could give everyone a Christmas gift I would wish that they lose weight, too. It means a whole new life." Gloria Bedali of 5 Belyea Crescent, Scarborough is 48, has five children and lost 102 pounds from May 26, 1969, to October 6, 1970. She used to wear_ a size 261/2 dress, now slips into a 12. She writes down everything she eats, so that she knows where she slipped and her fridge carries the Weight Watchers sign: Caution, this refrigerator is loaded. She says: "When you go out -take a piece of celery with you to chew on. People are very understanding." She -still bakes her own bread and makes pasta for her family but it has no attraction for her. Her Christmas gift to herself is a resolution that she will stay at her -Weight next year. Bill Hawkins, 41, of 38 Hallow Crescent, Rexdale, lost 132 pounds in 58 weeks. He reached his goal on Remembrance Day, November 11, 1970, started the Weight Watchers program on October 1, 1969. ' During his weight -losing program his family joined in and wife Yvonne lost 54 pounds, 21 year-old daughter Catherine 25 pounds and Brenda, 17, 23 pounds. Carolyn, only 13, shed 45 pounds. He is the last of the family to reach his .weight goal and he now lectures for Weight Watchers in Markham and Brampton. ill ,s of _ food.,;; :nuihdei zPand, to` him mince pie means a 54 -inch waist. That way he loses his desire for the pie. . Over the festive period he will make sure his family has lots of food but it will be the right food : . . lots of salads with his favorite Weight Watchers dish, apple sauce mixed with rhubarb. He suggests that you cook your turkey without the skin. Use tomato juice and green peppers„ to baste it and stuff it with bean sprouts and mushrooms. 'Bill works with an insurance company and couldn't even get his own life insured when he was overweight. He was above the rating. Now he has to keep his weight down for six months and then he will get it. He says: "When I was fat I once made a call . and after conducting my business I couldn't - get off' -titto wlbw chesterfield. The housewife had to help. me. That will never happen again."
