sOlut onn at last!'
How to stay
even
The jolly season that provides
10,000 delectable reasons for
gaining weight is just a jingle bell'
away.
And, as always, hundreds of
thousands of Canadians have
probably forgotten the tough
resolution they made last year as
they pushed themselves away
from a still laden table, groaning
that they had eaten too much.
The resolution, was that ' they
would never stuff themselves
again.
Faced . with traditional
Christmas goodies, however, and
too much time on their hands;
they probably will eat
theinselves to an alarming weight
gain and feel uncomfortable over
the holidays.
This will be the pattern for
most people, but not for Ruth
Morning, Al Smith, Gloria Bedali
and Bill Hawkins, the Toronto
foursome who have lost more
than 400' pounds between them.
Following the laws of Weight
Watchers of Ontario, they
gradually lost mountains of ugly
fat and intend to keep it off,
even during the season of
temptation. Weight Watchers is
an organization that helps,
people shed extra weight by
teaching them healthy eating
habits.
Here is how they will face up
to Christmas.
Ruth, 51, and a Toronto
grandmother, who lives at
Replin Road, shed 102 pounds
in 141/2 months. She started the
, Weight Watchers program on
May 7, 1969, and . finished on
July 22, 1970. She is now two
pounds under her goal.
Last year she gained six
pounds during Christmas. This
year she is at her desired weight
and intends to stay there.
She says: "Don't give in to
temptation. One treat becomes
two and before you know it,
you are gorging yourself and
your weight is skyrocketing."
"When I was - fat you
wouldn't have noticed an extra
five pounds; now you notice it
immediately. At my weight;
Christmas shopping is much
more fun. I will never gain
,vreight again." ; ..• •

"If I could give everyone a
Christmas gift I would wish that
they lose weight, too. It means a
whole new life."
Gloria Bedali of 5 Belyea
Crescent, Scarborough is 48, has
five children and lost 102
pounds from May 26, 1969, to
October 6, 1970. She used to
wear_ a size 261/2 dress, now slips
into a 12.
She writes down everything
she eats, so that she knows
where she slipped and her fridge
carries the Weight Watchers sign:
Caution, this refrigerator is
loaded.
She says: "When you go out
-take a piece of celery with you
to chew on. People are very
understanding."
She -still bakes her own bread
and makes pasta for her family
but it has no attraction for her.
Her Christmas gift to herself is a
resolution that she will stay at
her -Weight next year.
Bill Hawkins, 41, of 38
Hallow Crescent, Rexdale, lost
132 pounds in 58 weeks. He
reached his goal on
Remembrance Day, November
11, 1970, started the Weight
Watchers program on October 1,
1969.
' During his weight -losing
program his family joined in and
wife Yvonne lost 54 pounds, 21
year-old daughter Catherine 25
pounds and Brenda, 17, 23
pounds. Carolyn, only 13, shed
45 pounds.
He is the last of the family to
reach his .weight goal and he now
lectures for Weight Watchers in
Markham and Brampton.

favorite Weight Watchers dish,

He suggests that you cook

mushrooms.
'Bill works with an insurance
company and couldn't even get
his own life insured when he was
overweight. He was above the
rating. Now he has to keep his
weight down for six months and
then he will get it.
He says: "When I was fat I
once made a call . and after
conducting my business I
couldn't - get off' -titto wlbw

Following the Weight
Watchers program these people
and hundreds of others will have
a Merry Christmas but without
the Christmas miseries.

The key to sound quality is the combination of matched
tomponents and many years experience. Philips, through
several decades, has successfully added to its knowledge
of sound engineering by participating in every aspect of
it. Tbday, everything from transistors to cabinets. That
means, quality control. It also means perfect electronic
matching of characteristics. Philips experience in the
field of sound is evidenced by its many major sound
installations such as that in the La Scala Opera house of
Milan and in many similar situations where audiences are
especially critical and the demands for perfection are
unconditional.
