Children's Aid Societies in
Ontario are expressing deep
concern about the proposed
,Young - Offenders Act (Bill
- C-192) now before the House of
Commons.
This Act 'to replace the
Juvenile Delinquents Act seems
to abandon several aspects of the
present one which were designed
to protect children from being
treated as. criminals.
The Ontario Association of
Children's Aid Societies has sent
this wire to the Solicitor 'General
and the Prime Minister of
Canada:
"Representing the 5
Children's Aid Societies i
Ontario; we urge you to delay ,
debate on Bill C-192 until all
organizations affected - have
studied it. In its present foam
the Bill 'is reactionary.- Some
- sections seem retrogressive.- No
provision is made to implement
those sections which would
require new facilities for teenage
offenders: Our member Societies
wish to study the Bill and make
recommendations before it
proceeds further. We beg you to
delay second reading of the Bill
until we and other interested
bodies have an opportunity to
make. representations. We would
again urge you to furnish us with
sufficient 'copies of the Bill for
our members."
