The Goderich Signal-Star, 1970-12-10, Page 3ritulturcl ou
The overall , agricultural.
outlook is brighter this fall than
it has been for more than a year.
This is the central point that
comes auross. from papers
-prepared by economists in the
Economics Branch of the
Canada Department 4 of
Agriculture..
The outlook papers, covering
the major. Canadian "agricultural
commodities, were prepared for
the annual Canadian Agricultural
Outlook Conference which will
take place at Ottawa, November
23 and 24.
Delegates representing all
sectors of the agricultural
industry will discuss the
implications and alternatives of
the various commodity outlooks
during the conference.
The following is a very brief
summary of the main points
covered ' in the outlook papers.
WHEAT
Predictions indicate sales will
total between 675 and •700,
million w bushels this year,
including domestic°consumption
• and overseas shipments. That
will drop our carryover to about
650 million bushels, the lowest
level in three years. .
In spite of these, good sales,
carryover will be ample. -
Translated into acreages
rR required in wheat next year,
anything over 20 million acres
would increase our carryover.
Unless new circumstances arise
next year, the 4972 acreage
should remain at about 20
million acres, because ° exports
are not likely, to be as large this
year.
FEED GRAINS
The southern leaf blight
whrch reduced United States
corn crops has been pushing up.
world feed grain prices. -
Canada will likely export a
record amount of barley this
crop year and, with a large
livestock population, the
outlook for Canadian feed grains
is bright.
Barley acreage could be
Ph increased 'to between 14 and 16
million acres next year to meet
demand and to build sufficient
carryover stocks. Corn acreage in
Ontario. and Quebec' will likely
follow • the past trend of
increasing by 10 per cent a year
during the next year or two.
Prices for feed grains in Canada
will be strong in the 1910-71
4rop year, althoughcorn prices
thrill not be as high as in‘ the
United States.
The outlook for rye is not as
bright because supplies increased
to the highest levels since
1954-55, exports were down for
the third year in a row and
-- prices have tumbled.
DAIRY
Surplus production in the
w dairy industry is decreasing and
adjustments continue to take
f place leading , to improved
efficiency.
The outlook is for the same
general trends to continue next
year, depending largely on dairy
et. policies at both the federal and
provincial lever;
Surplus production of both
butter and skim milk powder
should decline next year.
1 .:.
POULTRY
Heavier production of
poultry meat and eggs is
expected to prevail for most of
1971. Feeding costs are likely to
remain higher, and more
competition from pork products
is expected. As a result, poultry
product prices will likely
continue at relatively low levels,
in spite of marketing board -
efforts in some provinces to raise
prices by controlling
interprovincial trade.
Broiler chicken production is
being expanded behind
interprovincial trade barriers in'
some provinces, thereby creating
7
surplus conditions in other
provinces. The same situation
prevails to a lesser extent with
respect to eggs and turkeys.
Until these problems are
t resolved, there will be difficult
and frustrating times ahead.
FRUITS
Canada will face_ _increasing
competition for world fruit
markets, particularly from the
• expanded production in Europe.
In the long term, total
consumption ,will increase with
-population in North America
and the United States will
ultimately comprise almost the
complete export market for
Canadian apples.
oka Canadian production of other
• fruits will continue to increase,
but so will offseason imports.
Some features to wateh for:
an . increase in production of
frozen fruits such as cherries and
berries because of improvements
in technology, pilmotion and
storage facilities; a decline in
processing of tendet tree fruits;
an increase in production of
grapes for processing, mainly for
the vvitte industry.
BEEF
Both consumption and
production . of beef are
increasing, but .feed costs are
rising, putting pressure on profit
margins for feedlot operators.*
Prices at Toronto have been_
above the .export basis; prices
next year will' range. close to
1970 levels. •
Farmers. • are building up
breeding herds,, pointing towards
ipereased production - in the.
year ahead.
more females are being kept for
herd expansion and for feedlot
finishing In the west: this has led
to a decline in the slaughter of
veal, and this trend will likely
continue next year, keeping
.prices of vealer calves high.
HOGS
nog production has been
increasing rapidly, particularly in
the west where feed• rains were
plentiful at low prices until this
fall.

intentions they outlined in a
recent survey.
Prices have been declining ,n

States. Next year' prices wi,l
