Goderich Kinsmen Club first conceived the idea of holding a Trade Fair in the town at the Goderich Memorial Arena. Under the direction of President Carl Banks, who was head of the local Kinsmen in that year, the Trade Fair was% established as an annual event. A summer 'holiday, Dominion Day, customarily marked the beginning of this four-day combination carnival -business - industrial show. Nightly entertainment was provided in the form of Grand„ Stand performances by first class show business. Guest speaker at the second annual Trade Fair in Goderich, in 1954, was the Hon. Walter E. Harris, then minister of finance • in the liberal government headed by Prime Minister . Louis St. Laurent. For harness racing fans, the Kinsmen Trade . Fair offered them an excellent opportunity to view , their . favorite sport at -the Agricultural Park raceway." Three bands,, the Blue Water band, The Goderich Girls Trumpet Band and the Goderich Pipe Band, led parades and took part in. other programme activities. The late John E•. Huckins, mayor of Goderich, was a platform guest for the 1954 official opening ceremonies of the inauguration of the Kinsmen Trade Fair. . In his opening remarks, Finance Minister Harris said: "Goderich Kinsmen Club is showing a spirit of enterprise and vigor that should ch=atacterize <` all our communities." , Mr. Harris said he felt it Wasa remarkable achievement for the Goderich Kinsmen to have organized the fair within .deveh years after their club had been formed. Five years later, in 1959, recently -elected MPP for the riding of South Huron, Charles MacNaughton, officially opened the 1959 Kinsmen Trade Fair. The paid attendance for the Kinsmen's fifth annual Trade Fair set a new record of 7,165.. The hardest working ticket seller was Bill Kirkey, who sold a total of 2,020 tickets for the four-day event. Professional wrestling was the ,featured attraction entertainment -wise, a year later at the Kinsmen's seventh annual Trade Fair. Most_ popular_ with the crowd were the midget wrestlers, Tom Thumb, Billy the Kid, Dandy Moore and Bouncing Burke. Hon. George Heed, Canadian Minister of Trade in, the federal, conservative government of the day, was officially welcomed at Sky Harbour by Goderich mayor Ernie Fisher when the Hon., Mr. Hees arrived Wednesday, June 29, 1961, to speak that evening at the Kinsmen's eighth annual Trade Fair. A Signal -Star editorial in that year commended the Goderich Kinsmen Club for advancing their Trade Fair, customarily held in August,- to a date starting Dominion Day; on or about July, 1st. Two years later, in 1963, the Signal -Star heralded the Kinsmen's tenth annual four-day Trade Fair as "the best in years:" Donate %OW to • launch drive Goderich Kinsmen have donated a token ' $1,000 to officially launch the drive to raise. . ,$100,000 by . public subscription to build a new wing to Goderich Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. . "This is not the last. of our donations by any, means," said Kin. president Bill Hanly. He added: "Our motto is, `Service for the community's greatest need', ' and this is the greatest need, at the present time." A. M. and G. Hospital board officials were on hand" to accept the cheque in a brief ceremony on the `hospital's front steps: Vice-chairman Jim , Britnell thanked the ' Kinsmen and Kinettes on behalf ofthe hospital. .
