Octogenarians feted annually
by Kinsmen-Kinettes
AUGUST 17, 1949: Some
twenty-fiveof,Goderich's oldest
residents . gathered in St.
Patrick's park this afternoon as
guests of the Kinsmen Club.
The gathering marked the
re -organization of the famed
Octogenarian Club founded by
the late. G. W. (Dick) Black a
quarter-century ago.
The pretty little gore park was
looking its best, as • the -
committee, under the
chairmanship of D. J. "Pat"
Patterson, had gone to much
trouble to make -it attractive.
When refreshments were served.
by members of the Kinette club,
the air of pleasant hospitality
was complete.
In his welcome speech,
Kinsmen President W. J.
McGrath said he had not realized
how important the Octogenarian
club was until he had.delved into
its history.
A minute's silence in memory
of Mr. Black was concluded with
prayer by Rev. C. Harding,'
Padre of Clinton Radar School:
"The town of Goderich is
indeed proud of its young -old
group here," Mayor George
MacEwan declared, as he
extended the good wishes of the
town. The Kinsmen Club, he

credit for the work it does.
Kinsman 11 J. Patterson
introduced Dr. W. F. Gallow as
the special speaker of the day
and the -doctor's address was
listened. - to -with marked
attention. ,
The following year, when the
Goderich Kinsmen sponsored
the second annual Octogenarian
picnic on July 22, the number of
seniorcitizens who attended was
more than double -that of 1949.
Perhaps it was 'because
Goderich Kinsmen 'did not
realize how numerous the town's
Octogenarians were until, early
in 1950, they began. recognizing
them in a different manner.
It was the presentation to
each Octogenarian of a record of
his or her birth on a parchment
with a pretty blue border
enclosed in a gold -colored frame.
For each succeeding birthday
after the 'eightieth a gold seal
with ribbon is attached to the
recorder D. J. "Pat" Patterson
calls on each birthday to
congratulate the recipient and to
present the certificate or seal.
Besides the name and date of
birth, there is the following
inscription:
"If wrinkles must be, written
upon the brow, let them not be
written upon the heart. The
spirit should not grow old." =-
James A. Garfield.
