HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1970-12-03, Page 34Kinettes sponsor girls softball league The Qoderich Kinette Club has organized a junior girls softball league consisting of four teams, made up of girls from ages 11 to 15. The four teams and their coaches are: BLOCKBUSTERS, coached by VIrs. V. Fuller, Mrs. G. Gardiner and Joanne Wildgen; BOMBERS, coached by Mrs. D. Murray and Mrs. R. Oke; SWINGERS, coached by Mrs. D. MacDonald and Mrs. C. Alexander; THE JETS, coached by Mrs. L. Mather and Mrs. B. Meriam. There are about 55 girls enrolled in the league which operates with volunteer empires. Donate '2500, for hospital - cooler Goderieh • Kinsmen and • Kinette clubs - on Thursday presented a cheque for $2500 to Alexandra Marine And General Hospital for a walk-in cooler for the hospital. The cheque covers the cost of the $2,000 refrigerator unit plus the $500 required to install necessary shelving. Mr. George Parsons, chairman of the board, expressed appreciation for the keen interest taken by these clubs in providing equipment for the hospital, thereby increasing its services. Mardi Gras Ball outstanding event One of the most popular social events of the winter in Goderich is the Mardi Gras dance held early. in February at • the "Harbourlite Inn, formerly known as the Goderich Pavilion, under the auspices of the Kinette Club. Dancing to a popular band provides entertainment for a near -capacity attendance at the event. Each year a Mardi Gras Kinette Queen is chosen. Some of the Kinette queens in the past have been: 1960: Mrs. Grant Chisholm; 1961: Mrs. Bud Worthy; 1962: Mrs. J. H. (Pat) Stringer; 1963:, Mrs. Clita Holland; 1964: Mrs. Alma McLean; 1967: Mrs. Robert Smith; 1968: Mrs. Fritz ;Basler; 1969: Martha Archibald; 1070: Sylvia Chisholm. The Kinette who is chosen Queen of the Mardi Gras receives,, a dozen red roses and a host of other loyely gifts through the courtesy of Goderich merchants. d. Early in 1948, less than- a year after the Kinsmen Club had been founded, Kinsmen 0 executives were helping Goderich ladies organize a Kinette Club The . Signal -Star recorded the event as -follows: "The _Park House was the scene of a pleasant function on Wednesday evening, when, at a Valentine dinner, ,the organization of a Kinette Club took place in conjunction with the Goderich Kinsmen's Club. Mr. D. J. Patterson, as chairman, was assisted by Mr. Frank Skelton and Mr. Stewart Carter, members of the Kinsmen's Club. Mrs. D. J. Patterson was unanimously chosen president of the Kinette Club. Bill Kirkey honored The Goderich Kinsmen Club at its annual,installation banquet Monday night presented a special trophey, to Bill ,Kirkey, manager of the Kinsmen Club softballers , who won the 1964 Industrial League playoff title two weeks ago. The award to Kirkey was held in conjunction with installation of new Kinsmen officers for the 1964-65 club year. — Instilling officer was District Governor Mait Edgar of Clinton Kinsmen Club.
