He has a message for all Kinsmen on the inside front • cover of the Kin. $ KINSMEN CLUB ACTIVITIES OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS Newspaper- clippings from the Goderich Signal -Star in the year 1947 indicate the busy schedule of events arranged by the Goderich Kinsmen club immediately after they were organized. Some of the events were: Inter -club meet held in Kincardine; 1947,. representatives of Goderich Kinsmen Club filed an entry with O.H.A. for an intermediate "B" hockey team: It is surmised they will be placed in the same group as Seaforth and Clinton. • An account of the Goderich Kinsmen first .encounter with another team appears in a later edition of the Signal -Star. The Goderich team loses 10-8 to. Seaforth. Goderich Kinsmen ...sponsor a • carnival in courthouse park on Monday, August 2, 1948, their second. Feature event of the carnival is a draw for a brand new 1948 Studebaker. •4 A l It was won by Harold Wise, 19, of R.R. 2 Clinton.' Goderich Kinsmen attend a charter night for a Kinsmen Club being organized in a neighbouring town in Huron county, W. Wingham Kinsmen Club is founded' on Friday, November 19, 1948. Notice Appears in the Kinsmen scrapboolof a paper collection organized to help and in co-operation to raise- funds for the club. A monster bingo was held on January 21., 1949 at Goderich Town Hall. The scrapbook contains a plentiful number of photos depicting the 'frolics and capers of Kinsmen at their first Halloween night masquerade ball in 1948.• As early as 1948, Goderich Kinsmen had organized and promoted a Traffic Safety Campaign. nw -Early in 1949, the Kinsmen organized the Goderich Octogenarian Club which flourished for some years under the ,inspiration of the late' "Dick" Black. "Under .the sponsorship ' of the Kinsmen its operations will include the maintenance of the small park at the junction of St. Patrick and Arthur streets. In the same year, the Kinsmen promoted a safety campaign amongst Goderich bike riders by encouraging them to apply Speetru-lite to their bicycles. It was supplied free of charge by the Kinsmen. In October 1949, Goderich Kinsmen won a national Kinsmen trophy, the Founders' attendance trophy. The percentage attendance figure at Goderich during the year was 99.5 percent. 1957: Kinsmen open 22,OOO ,park —During—their-23 years of --life b -,a child -may -be -saved by community service, Goderich • Kinsmen • had no prouder moments than when their South Street park -playground was officially opened July 1, 1957. The Signal -Star headlined the event, "CLUB'S DREAM FOR KIDS IS REALITY AS PARK OPENS. An account of the occasion as it appeared in the Signal -Star is as follows: "Years of planning and toil were rewarded Monday evening when the Kinsmen playground and wading pool were declared officially open blr Elston Cardiff, MP for Huron. Mayor John H. Graham cut the ribbon as a large crowd of youngsters and their parents looked on. "It is my hope," said D. J. "Pat" , Patterson, Kinsmen playground chairman, "that the being in this playground rather than out playing on the street." The playground, located one block east of the' arena, represents an investment of about $22,000 by the club. Official ceremonies begario after the Goderich Pipe Band led a parade of children into the park. "This is a proud night for the Goderich Kinsmen club," said President Earl Rawson. "This represents many hours of work and many thousands of dollars." On behalf of the club, he gave special thanks to Goderich Kinette club, the Ontario Provincial Police and -the Town of ,Goderich for donations and other assistance. The club hopes to add more equipment to the playground as time goes on, the president said. Kinsmen' provide club room in Public Library The Goderich Signal . Star publicized the opening of the new club room In the public library in 1951 with the following novelty lead paragraph: "Wanted — A least one •experienced chess player. Must have lots of spare time and an unreliable knowledge of the history of Goderich, sufficient to provoke arguments about such - matters, as the identification of former members of ToWn Council. Also, a card table with a hard top, strong enough to withstand several lively games of euchre. Anyone having a knowledge of • the whereabouts of the above, please contact D. J. Patterson, Patrick Street." ---� "Pat" Patterson, chairman of the Kinsmen Club's Octogenarian Committee, recently supervised the opening of the new club room for "the oldest people in town" as they call themselves on the large banner hanging on the wall in the basement of the library. Around the banner are displayed pictures of former Town Councils dating back to 1923. 13 An average of about ten older members of the community "visit the club -room each day: There they find not only their friends to chat With but magazines and . games a. well. N.B. DONATION OF AN INHALATOR TO THE TOWN OF' GOIERICH BY THE KINETTE CLUB WAS A MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION OF THE• KINETTE"S. THIS DONATION TOOK PLACE IN 1952. Goderich Kinsmen contribute a cheque for nearly $1,000. to the Goderich Arena building campaign fund: Past President W. J. McGrath made the presentation to D. D. Mooney, Goderich Arena building fund chairman. •' Goderich becomes Focus of Kinsmen Club Activity on September 30, 1950, when District No. 1 of Kinsmen hold their Fall Council Meeting at the Park House. In 1951, a Carnival sponsorgd by the Kinsmen on August 9, raised $2,500 for Kinsmen playground on South Street.
