New, helpful ideas
about your insurance
The practice of ~increasing a
policyholder's auto insurance
preznium following one accident
has become a sourceof,
"continuing irritation" and
should be changed, the Ontario
Insurance Agents' Association
suggests.
The recommendation is
contained in the independent
agents'recent submission to the
Ontario Government on ways to
improve insurance in Ontario.
The OIAA suggested that no
increase in premium should be
lodged against a driver "in the
event of one claim in a given
period".
A rating system based on
Department .of Transport
demerit points plus the accident
claims record should also be
investigated, the OIAA. brief
suggested. •
Under such a system, the
OIAA recommended, a premium
increase would be allowed only
after careful consideration is
given to "mileage travelled, years
insured, nature of employment,
and a host• of other
circumstances all relative to the
situation."
AUTO INSURANCE SHOULD
PAY; FOR COURTESY CARS,
AGENTS URGE
The Ontario Insurance
Agents' Association has urged•
the provincial ,government to
revamp insurance regulations so
that auto policies would pay for
courtesy cars being -issued to
motorists whose autos are being
.repaired_.following a collision...
The OIAA, which represents
2,200 independent insurance
agents in Ontario,• made the
recommendation in its recent
brief to thegovernment on ways
to improve insurance coverage in
Ontario.
"Since the automobile and its
use is no longer a luxury - but
an absolute necessity to ou
present way of life, it is
imperativethat all receive loss of
use — for either business or
pleasure when their automobile
is damaged as a result of. an
accident," the brief stated.
"Most reputable repair garages
have available courtesy cars for
their clients at a rate of $5 per
day.
"This should be paid
regardless of fault — whether or
not there is a responsible third
nartv."
GIVE THE MAN ON THE
RIGHT THE RIGHT—OF—WAY
A major area of discontent
among auto insurance
policyholders) is the bickering
that arises from accidents
occurring at uncontrolled
intersections, the Ontario
Insurance Agents' Association
noted in a brief to the Ontario
Government.
The OIAA.. 'suggested that
legislation should be enacted
that would spell out that the
man on. the right has the
right-of-way.
Most jurisdictions already
favour • the right-of-way
interpretation, •so "why not quit
arguing about prior entry, speed,
etc., etc.," the, brief contended.
"This would eliminate
complaints and unfair
settlements from a host of
circumstances and would make
the insureds more cognizant of
their individual responsibility."
ANIMAL COLLISON CLAIMS
SHOULD BE GIVEN_ BETTER
SHAKE INDEPENDENT
AGENTS SUGGEST
If a motorist accidentally hits
a rfioose or deer with his car, he
should - not be penalized by
having to pay a collision
deductible, the. Ontario
Insurance. Agents' Association
recommends.
In a brief to the provincial
government on ways to improve
auto insurance coverage in
Ontario, the independent agents
contend that in animal collision
cases, the driver rarely has a
chance to avoid the collision.
The brief recommended that
animal collision should be
considered as a comprehensive
claim --- and paid with a lower
deductible.
PAY THE IN.NOCENT
VICTII\IS FIRST, THEIST
ARGUE- ABOUT IT, AGENTS
SUGGEST
The Ontario Insurance
Agents' Association has
suggested, in a brief to the
provincial government, that
damages incurred by innocent
victims in a three -or -more -car
collision should be paid
immediately by the insurance
companies of the two principal
cars involved.

weeks and months for payment

the original collision. And if he
has collision insurance, he is at
least out of pocket for his
deductible.

Betw een 1960 and 1970 some pork prices in Canada rose while others fell.
Two which came down in price, even despite inflation, were. pork shoulder
and cottage roll. In October ° the average retail price of pork shoulder in
Toronto was 60.4 cents a pound; in September 1970, 59.7 cents a pound.
