Angus H. Shortt, youthful'veteran of 31 -years
service with Ducks Unlimited (Canada), today is as
engrossed with his full-time painting of and working
for waterfowl andwildlife as he was at the beginning,
As Ducks Unlimited's artist technician, .his, duties run'
on a wide field and _cansiantly changing challenges.
The versatility of hi% work is notable 'and whose
patience is a legend.
Looking back over the record, he breaks into an
easy Irish grin and sums it up with "You might say
it's been a case of art for duck's sake! Never a dull
moment. 1:ve enjoyed every minute".
Hundreds of favorite corners and walls throughout
North America portray the knowledge and feeling
that the 62 -year-old- craftsman hs gained through hiS
frequent jaunts into the world of the marsh.
He along with the late Bert Cartwright, former
Chief Naturalist for Ducks Unlimited, were corn
missioned by Sport's Afield Magazine in 1945 to co-
author a book on North America ducks and geese.
His 36 full color renderings have been republished
continually since that time and are available on news-
stands in handy pocketbook f9rm.-
- - one of- the main reasons_his paintings_and.works
are in so great a demand is that he knows his subjects
well. For ekample he studied taxidermy and exhibition
techniques at .the American Museum of Natural History
in New York. The Natural Museum of Canada, hired
him,,to conduct ornithological surveys in west central
Manitoba for two years and prior to that time logged
many miles studying birds from both a scientific and
.artistic standpoint. He was elected a member of the
august American Ornithological Union in 1952. .
Angus Shortt has spent many hours in the prepara-
tion of the 104 -week series "Marsh World" and he
hopes that his notes an illustrations will provide an
insiders look into the wonderful world of a marsh.
The first of this. series appears this week al the Editorial page

With replacement calves and
yearlings coming into the
Ontario Beef feedlots at
relatively strong prices, it is
imperative that the', feedlot
operator do the best possible. job
of management he can in order
to increase his profits. •
Once the replacements are
settled down and over the stress
of moving, they should be
treated for Warbles.
Named brand products, such
as, Neguvon, Ruelene or Co-Ral
are recommended. Neguvon and
Ruelene are pour -on systemics.
Co-Ral as a Wettable powder and
a Ruelene liquid are. also
available as sprays. Systemic
insecticides .are absorbed
through the skin and into the
animal's system. At the
recommended levels these
products do not cause any harm,
but kill the warble grubs while
they are small and before much
damage has occurred.

Chickens like
green, yellow;
not reel, blue
--t
• If chickens went shopping,
they'd pick items colored yellow
or green, and, only occasionally
bother with those colored red or
blue.
These discoveries about the
color preferences of chickens
have - been- made by Dr. Fred
Jerome and Mr. Frank Hurnick,
Poultry Science Department,
University of Guelph, who are
con ducting color research
projects on chickens under the
sponsorship of the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food.
Several groups of 150 day-old
Comb White Leghorns and the
same number of Columbian
Plymouth Rocks are being tested
separately for color preference.
Mr. Hurnick has built four
housingareas around a central,
square, neutral -colored housing
zOne. Each of the four areas has
its own feed„ an4 water units,
and each area and N,equipment
in it is painted a diff nt color.
The central area n be
vertically lifted and dropped. At
preset intervals the central zone,
which houses all the chickens, is
lifted, alloWing the chickens free
access to the colored zohes. The
central section is then dropped
and the chickens in each zone
counted. The experiment is
repeked several timesa day and
an average of the numter of
chicks moving into different
colored zones is tabulated.
Results, after 12 ,days, shOwed
a distinct preference in both
breeds for the yellow (32.7 per
cent) and green (26.2 per cent)
areas, with red (22.7 per cent)
and blue (18.4) per cent taking
third and fourth place.
Other cOlor experiments using
hens showed the same results.
Hens preferred to nest in yellow
and green nesting houses and, if
in cages, to feed ,from yellow
ad green units, or from units
combining these two colors. ,
One recent experiment
featured feeding troughs colored
in, combinations of the four
cOlorS. The hens came into
contact with a different color
combination" each day, 'never
seeing the same combinatibn
twiee. The most popular
conibinittion °tall was -one that
contained all four colors.
