THE SEMI-FINALS It looks as though there is just no stopping i,he Junior Basketball team again this year! Last week Goderich entered into the semi-finals -against Huron MP questions cost at Kingston OTTAWA - Huron County's member of Parliament wants to know why the federal government has to spend $1.2 :million for what, he had been told ,kere to be only "minor renovations" at a Kingston military base to accommodate Clinton's m radar and communications school. Robert McKinley, (PC-Huron)"said he plans to ask Defence' MinistersDonald Macdonald to accout for the expenditure. Expansion plans for the Vimy and McNaughton barracks in Kingston were confirmed November 19. They will be necessary for the transfer of 300 instructors and trainees from CFB Clinton, scheduled to be closed down by Sept. 1, 1971. Mr. McKinley said he asked former defence minister Leo Cadieux last spring how much money. the government planned to spend in Kingston. "He told me there would be no new construction, only some minor renovations," said Mr: McKinley. "This_. (the announcement of the $1.2 million program) is directly .contrary to what was 'said last spring and I will be asking for answers in the House the first of next week." Various groups . have been attempting to find a tenant for the 287 -acre base near Clinton to provide jobs for local civilians who will be out of work - some are already laid off - when the base closes. Mr. McKinley said talks are continuing in an attempt to have a new' air traffic controllers • training centre located al the base but no decision has yet been made by the department of transport. "We've been negotiating behind the scenes," he said. "But I'm not giving them too much"longer." Another possibility he said, is use of the base as a satellite campus for Conestoga. Community. College ' in Kitchener. In January, it was confirmed for Mr. McKinley that moving costs alone for the defence department transfer from Clinton to Kingston would be $500,000. The • department, however, hopes.to save $4,600,000 a year by consolidation of bases. Kingston will not benefit fully by the transfer. It was also confirmed that 300 instructors and trainees • from the weapons and vehicle training section at Vimy barracks. would be transferred to CFR Borden about the same tinre , as the communication people move .in.
