'S. Lovest Thou Me? True love, if it is to be effective, must have an object. Three times in succession (in John 21). The Lord Jesus probes the heart of His disciple with the question, Simon son of Jonas, lowest thou me? Wisely but firmly the Lord repeats His enquiry until He lays bare hidden thoughts and Peter is forced to Onfess, as he remembersformer days. (Matthew 26.35) "Lord, ' Thou knowest all things' How solemn to think that nothing escapes the Lord's penetrating gaze. He knows us with an ever gracious understanding and thoroughness. He knows" our virtues and our vices; our triumphs and our failures, our faith and our unbelief; our strength and our weakness; and, what is more, He knows the extent . of our .., tte.ct1Q,la towards Him -Self, for His Person. It is this last that takes precedence over all else and to everyone who bears tTeiiame of Christ amid the subtle enticements of this present world there comes the same challenge: "Lovest thou Me more than these?" < More than these. "What is tie' force of this comparison? Is it :these .-.. other-- dicip`1es? dr does it refer to' things, such as secular activities, r(fishing for example? The answer to each is in - the affirmative for the grammar of the original covers both. The issue, then,is clear. No matter what other claims press upon us Christ must occupy First place in our affections, a love that brooks'rio rival, seeing that He First loved us. If this be so- what about our love, for the Sabbath day and Church worship. How can anyone in these days w'.io name, the name of Christ, and profess to love Him, how can they stay hormefrom church on BurEda,'gc'o1im'g;'tsr attend Broke? Mend . that situation by borrowing from us. Our low Credit Union rates make it pleasurable to take put a Personal Loan. GODERICH COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION the horse racing, or other forms of amusement making all kinds of excuses for being absent from God's house and knowing full well- down in their hearts that Christ knowest all things even our secret thoughts. We cannot tell Him that. we love Him and then turn around and deny Him. Jesus is asking the same question today to all members of the Christian Church. Do you love these pleasures, more than Me? Is it nothing to you that I died for you? The Advent season is upon us again. We hear a good deal about Santa Claus, about gifts for Him and Her, buy now pay later. This is a splendid idea, but. we must not lose sight of the fact that had not Christ come into the world there would have been no Christmas. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all_ acceptation that _ Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. God loves us and it is His wish that we all be happy. . Do we - wish to make God happy? We can by accepting His most precious gift, in the person of His only begotten Son. Christian reader, members of the Christian Church, your Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is speaking. to._.to ::me,.- - asking "Lovest thou MeV' "THE BIBLE TODAY" December 6 to December 12, 1970 On July 7th, 1970, the leading Beirut French daily paper con- tained an unusual news item headed 'The Missionary Driver To His Passengers: Love One Another'. As a result, he takes with him in his taxi some fifteen copies of the Gospel according to John (the 'small Arabic Gospel with a coloured cover 'recently pub- lished by the Bible Society in the Lbanon)and distributes these to clients who show any kind of interest On the first page he has written. in Arabic and English this sentence_ Study the Bible to be wise.; Believe it to be safe; practice it to be holy'. SPAM PAIS, *IRIIAN MIRLE SOCIETY CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 6063.3 "PAUL NOT ONE OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES" Occasionally the Lord's apos- tles are charged with acting arbi- trarily in choosing Matthias to take Judas' place. It is said that they first chose two candidates and then asked God which of these two He would have to fill the vacant position. Paul, they feel, was actually God's choice for Judas' place. But this charge is not based upon the record Of the Scripture: 1. The apostles, with Peter as their chief, had been given au- thority4to act officially in Christ's absence (Matt. 16:19; 18:18, 19). 2. They acted upon the Scrip- tural declaration that another apostle should be chosen to fill Judas' place (Psa. 109:8 cf. Acts 1:20). 3. Their action was bathed in, many days of united prayer (Luke 24:49 cf. Acts 1:12.15) and when two candidates were found they again prayed and left the final choice in the hands of God. (Acts 1:24-26). 4. Probably only•two (Matthias and Joseph Barsabas) were' eligi- ble, for only those could qualify who had followed Christ continu- ously from the day of His bafptism by John until His ascension, to heaven (Acts 1:21, 22, cf. Matt. 19:28 "Ye which have followed Me"). , . 5. Paul would not have been eligible; for he had not even seen Christ during His earthly ministry (I Cor. 15:8). 6. The conclusive proof that, the eleven acted in the will of God in this matter is found in the fact that the Scripture clearly states that Matthias "was numbered with the eleven apostles (Acts 1:26) and that "THEY WERE ALL FILLED WITH THE I-i.GLX, SPIRIT" (Acts 2:4). Men 'out of the will of God are not filled with the Holy Spirit. Thus Paul stands separate and distinct from the twelve as the apostle of the present dispensa- tion of grace (Eph 3:1-3).
