Snoopy is in skatesfor new 1971 ice show A troupe of talented young people makes Shipstads and Johnson Ice Follies what it is today — the country's most successful ice show. The Ice Follies of 1971 will be in Toronto for a 13 -day run, beginning Tuesday, January 19, at Maple Leaf Gardens. • The cast of "The New Ice Age" is headed by dapper Richard Dwyer, 35,, in his 21st season as the show's ambassador of the ice, "The Debonaire." The show's other principal Humphry, whose dare -devil 'skaters — all in their early 20's — skills won all the Canadian kating_ laurels in 1968 and 1969, was star of the Ice Follies Inteiational Company last year. Miss Miller and Stuart are both making their professional debuts this season. The Show prides itself in the youth of its cast, feeling it is the young people who give the Ice Follies its fresh, new look each season. Buy quality when you buy Christmas trees Buying a Christina.% tree can be fun or -- it cart be frustrating. Although official grades for Christmas trees in Ontario are laid down under the Ontario 'Department of Anciculture and Food's Farm Products Grades and Sales Act, very few vendors use them. Thus the buyer must judge the size, shape, and quality of the tree carefully. A tree has four faces or sides. A top quality tree will have four faces free from defects; the next grade, three faces free . from defects, and so on. If a tree is to be set up in a corner, two faces free from defects will be satisfactory, and presumably the cost of this lower grade tree will be less. Avoid a tree° with—a" crooked trunk; it's impossible to set up a crooked tree properly. Large bare spaces between branches, and other defects. will spoil the appearance of the tree. A tree should be bought as late as possible to ensure its freshness, .as long as there is a reasonable selection available. However, earlier purchase may be necessary to get a well -shaped tree. are Susan Berens, Jill Shinstad, s Ricky Inglesi, Karen • Kresge, Ron and Cindy Kauffman, Jay Humphry, James Stuart and Kathleen Miller, who is just 18. Inglesi and Misses Berens, Shipstad and Kresge are show. veterans. The Kauffmans, 'popular brother -sister team and former U.S. Pairs Champions, are in their second season with the show. • Decorate your home with family portraits. Today, the modern family is always on the ° go -seldom all together at any one time. If this. typifies your 'family, • why' not ' let- your home - decoration help keep you together? • You can, with a collection of favorite photographs and a little decorating ingenuity. Family ' portraits" :... malt ' excellent decorating themes, and decorating experts agree- there are many attractive ways to display these photographs in the home. Once family photographs were relegated to the top of the piano — or to the familSralbum. But today, "groupings" of family pictures can be created to decorate even .a living room wall. Su c h portraits become t conversation pieces, usually enjoyed by visitors. While there are no hard-and-fast rules for decorating with photographs, here are a few simple pointers to add that distinctive touch to + your home display. Follow' the modern trend by hanging framed portrait photographs on the wall. This at. avoids an old-fashioned, . cluttered look of tabletops covered, with small framed portraits. - Scale wall displays • to furniture sizes. When hanging small portraits, group them together so the total arrangement appears larger. Place large portraits alone or in arrangements of just a few. Hang photographs low ..on the wall near the tops of furniture. When portraits are placed behind a couch, they should be just above head level. If photographs are hung in a dark corner, use indirect lighting 'W in the ceiling or an overhead valance board so that the portraits can be seen easily. To achieve a tasteful. wall display, experiment with the arrangement. Collect all the photographs you wish to use and arrange them on the floor till you're satisfied with the results. faces should either --look in the same direction or towards the centre. Mix the shapes of the photographs. Rectangles, squares and ovals can be grouped together in an interesting t arrangemen . Try mixing the photographs so that a variety of subjects is used. Babies and adults should be grouped together to :give' xtra interest in the arrangement: Break up an arrangement of portrait photographs by inserting favorite curios, paintings or scenic photographs. A frame can make or break a photo display, ' therefore, it is wise to follow these few simple hints when preparing your photographs for display. While expensive and elaborate f▪ rames are not necessary, you. might wish to showcase the large color portraits in your ,- collection. Be sure to select a molding that will coordinate with your furniture styles. Colors in the photographs or in your room decor • can be' accented with a mat or :fabric insert. This treatment is best with portraits d" by 10" or larger. Photographs in a group arrangement should have relatively. _simple frames. Plain dark wood frames with white or off-white mats are traditionally appropriate. When grouping dissimilar portraits, coordinate frame and mat styles and colors. Black-and-whife and ' color photographs can be used successfully in the same arrangement. • Photographs in simple wood frames, without mats, can make an attractive display for a modern setting. This places all the attention on the"photograph, where it belongs. There's nothing like aportrait photograph to give personality to a room, and a family collection of pictures are well worth sharing with family and friends. So put -the phoigraphs where everyone can enjoy them. at An added attraction this year is Snoopy. Thanks to his creator, Charles Schulz, Snoopy strolls. out of his dog house and demonstrates his ability as the "world's most famous skater." He is just delightful in one scheduled and several unscheduled appearances on the ice. Clubs and groups should call Kathy Carter ' (416) 964-8014 for special rates — plans must be made early as this is the best Ice Follies in history. e r TA PIIlA m o RE' 'MOAK TAVERN BAYFIELD ROAD GODERICH 524-7711 ._.....___..... Water should be kept in the stand all the time the tree is up. To allow for better absorption of water, saw a half-inch off the butt of the tree before putting it in the stand. Evergreens are highly inflammable and "burn fiercely. A Christman tree should .not be located near a fireplace, radiator, television set, or ,other source of heat. But the flickering flame never died and this Christmas, more candle's will be .lit than at. any. other time in history; according to a survey released by Coutts Hallmark Cards. "Candle sales have more than doubled, in •the 'past ten years, with recent increases the- most noticeablegak1 Mike Butorac, Candle Manager. Calcites are ancient history to mankind.. Disk -shaped candlesticks similar in design to modern candles were found at Crete and date from the pre -historic Minoan civilization about 3,00.0. B.C. The Romans used candles and tapers made of tallow, melted animal fat, and wax, the Coutts 'Hallmark spokesman said. During the Middle Ages in Europe, only the wealthy could afford wax candles and the poor used the rushlight, reed stripped to the pith and dipped in oil. "Probably the first special Christmas candle in this country may have been the scented bayberry candle 'made by the early settlers. They used the berries they found growing and produced the greenish wax used in the candle," 'Butorac said. Other scented candles available to today's modern housewife include the pine, sandalwood, jasmine, lilac, woodhue,'lemon and spice. 4111111111110, • "There is something old fashioned and warm about the glow of the candle that is an integral part of the. Christmas season," Butorac said, "At the same time, contemporary designing and, modern techniques guarantee . that the candle fits in with today's life style and decorating themes." One Coutts - hallmark Christmas candle, for example, combines the traditional star shape with a delightful pine fragrance in several heights for stair -step arrangements. Other candles co-ordinate with modern style Christmas party sets and include a Holly candle, and two stylized Christmas tree designs. ' Specially designed Christmas wreaths, irrcluding holly designs and holiday colors are also available for decorating candle holders and complimenting — or creating — a centrepiece. DECORATING HINTS o- Mr. Butorac listed , the following "how-to" hints to remember when decorating with candles. * A candle should be shorter or taller than the holder — but not the same height. * Candles six to fifteen inches in height are appropriate for traditional candelabra, sconces and chandeliers. * To obtain maximum burning hours from a candle, burn it three to four hours at a time and allow it to cool completely before relighting, DAY,'r uta ,' * If scented candles appear to, lose their fragrance, scratch the outer layer of wax to release the fragrance of the . fresh ..wax underneath. "Our designers have found that tall graceful candles are elegant on a low table or sideboard, but shorter candles look better on a mantle or high shelf," Butorac said. "The modern block style candles go well in; the den or in the entrance hall to welcome your holiday visitors." This year thousands of Canadians will put an added glow into Christmas, he said, seeking the quiet peace and good will traditionally symbolized by the candle.
