The Act provides for a
Maternity Leave of 12 weeks for
employees with one year of
service i,or more and prohibits
dismissal for pregnancy.
All employers of 25 or more
employees of , both sexes are
bound by the maternity leave
provisions. The total number of
employees will be counted
rather than the number
employed in a particular
location or branch.
On presentation' of a medical
certificate, an employee may -
initiate the leave at any time
within six weeks of the expected
date of birth. Or an employer
can initiate it even earlier if he

implicitly states her intention of

from her to this effect.
POST4IATAL LEAVE
This is fixed at • six weeks,
unless the employee produces
medical' authorization for an
earlier return to w.ork.
The employer's Obligation to
reinstate the employee ends at
the expiration of the six weeks
post -natal leave period, allowing

longer than six. weeks, this is in
accord with the Act.
The intent of the legislation is
that the employee shall return to

I had a plea.sant little note this
week from Mrs. Hazel Steels RN,
the lady who has retired from
the staff of Goderich Alexandra

years 9f nursing.

phe pointed out that we had
,forgotten to include in the_
article that she had' worked for
25 years in the numery and
maternity departMent lof the
hospital.
"Many of our babies are now
mothers in their oWn right,"
writes Mrs. Steels. "My how the
years roll by."
Mrs. Steels wasn't the only
one who has drawn my attention
to her work in the hospital's
nursery. Just last week,. a young
mother mentioned to me that
she had read the story about
Mrs. Steels and was very sorry to
see her leave the hospital.
"She worked for years in the
nursery, you know," shq told
me, "and you could always tell
when Hazel was in there. When
the babies would come out for
their feedings, if they had any
hair at all, it was brushed into
big curls on the tops of their
heads. She must have loved each
one- of those babies."
A wonderful tribute to a
faithful nurse, I'd say. These are
the things that make all the
effort worthwhile.
