The addition of an. ornamental. fountain at the intersection of ,Victoria Street and . I believe that with the combined efforts of the Town, the P.U.C., . and Dom -Tar Chemicals, we could and should arrive at some plan for providing the Salt Mine with a town water supply. Over .the past years, water services . were extended to Maitland Golf and Country Club, Dominion Roads for added fire protection, Sheaffer Pen Co., -and our, empty Industrial Park has a very complete sewer and water service. Therefore, I see no argument' against Sifto Salt Mine receiving the same services. If I am elected Mayor for the town of Goderich for the next term, I assure you I will still carry out my duties with your. best interests in mind, as I have in the past five years. Thank -you. Dr. Mills said two phases of a four-phase sewer program had been completed and the other stages were scheduled for work. Waterloo and Elgin Avenue both have been completed and more work is planned to start in the : spring. Dr. Mills said the one thing he had disagreed with on - the financing of the sewers was _ _that they were paid for over two years instead of spreading the cost over a longer period of time. He said ' he felt . if the" financing had been carried ,out over five years the taxpayer could have had a decrease in the mill rate this year, making the community unique, On the subject of recreation, Dr. Mills said he was greatly impressed with the work of the Go derich Recreation" and Community Centres Board members in getting the arena work' carried out as this had resulted in a "tremendous recreational facility" for the town. Dr. Mills said the arena now was filled with young people all the time ,,and was expected to start paying its own way and make money with roller skating and ice skating. He said the arena renovations had been approved over much opposition from council and he commended the recreation.. board for its perseverance .and ' eventual success in getting approval. He said he gave credit to council too for. finally seeing that the work was right and proceeding with the work. Dr. Mills referred to the work carried out at Judith,Gooderhani Park with the replacement -of a filtration system that in ,part had never worked with a modern unit that made the pool the best there was in the area. He said the recreation board, also had obtained grants fr the work that amounted to a considerable amount of money. For the future he suggested improvement of the roads in the town; he said the relighting of the Square should be carried out and tourist promotion and development should "continue. Continuation of the industrial cannot, in all faith, take part in a game because the music is on for another election. "There have been major things, done in our town in the last four years•that I have served and.I have been proud to have played a major 'part within the council to bring these about and I have felt a great deal of sense of accomplishment With the completion of these projects for the town. "You and I have seen the progressive face of this town and I believe the town is very much better for it. It is a credit to you and people from other areas say this, they don't say it of me, but of you, and I am proud to be a part of it. "If it is your wish I will go on in 1971 with the people 'w'ho already have been elected and continue to support a thoughtful., progressive policy for the good of this town." WORSELL SPEECH... Reeve Harry Worsell will oppose Mayor Dr. G. F. Mills at the December 7 Municipal election. His nomination address is as follows: Mr. Chairman, Fellow Citizens: I wish to thank the gentlemen who }have nominated me for the - Mayor's office for 1971-72. I have moved through the various offices in, town council over the past five years, and during 1969-70 I have been Reeve of the town, and also represented you at County Council. Now I feel it Is my dutyto move on from this position, to give those coming behind . me the opportunity to be Reeve. 3o, for 1971-72, I am seeking the office of Mayor. As always; I have tried to act in the best interests of all the people of Goderich, and I shall continue to do so. Before this evening is over you will hear many fluent speakers. A true indicator of the growth of home building is the fact - of our • installing 68 new, individual .. water services during the past two years; Also 4850 of .new water mains have been put in. Sometime ago .Town Uouncil ratified our: recommendation of enlarging the pumping capacity at. the pumping station:- The added capacity of 500,000 gals per day will be of much benefit, and will thus bring daily output to 4 million gals. O.W.R.C. recently developed a new type filter which will replace the present old filters. This fact has brought about this extra capacity at a reasonable cost of $20,000.00. One can readily understand, that if plants enlargement were involved, and in this case is not, of this extra of 500,000 gais, capacity could well exceed $150,000,00. The ;sum of $20,000.00 Will come out of our Reserve Fund held by O,W.R.0 ,, and will thus not be a direct out or pocket expense. If and -when plants enlargement is absolutely necessary, with its extremely high cost, their cost. of the present enlargement certainly will not have been wasted, It will mean exactly this much capacity Of pumping station elsewhere, taking 'advantage of this new filtration process, In the older sections of town SORRY The Signal -Star regrets that a .large . volume. of copy for this issue was left out due to lack of space. 1111111111e111111111111111111IIppppp111111I111111111111111M1 the cost are numerous inadequate water mains, which we would like .to have replaced before how.
