Religious education
Nicodemus, a ruler,
recognized Jesus as "a Teacher
come from God" (John 3:1-21)
and gave his reason therefore,
which was conclusive. He did
* not ask a question, according to
the record,. before Jesus gave
him the 'formula for the new
birth. It was not a physical birth.
It was not the result of a process
of - education. W It was a
supernatural process to be
wrought by God upon a.willing
subject. I say "willing subject"
because man's will, until yielded,
is opposed to God. "The natural
man receiveth not the things of
the Spirit of God: for they are
foolishness unto him: neither
can he know them, because they
aro spiritually dicemed".
It was a spiritual birth,
something which Nicodemus
could not understand any more
than he could , understand the
source and destiny of the wind.
Nor does anyone fully
• understand it. It is a fact which
can be known only by personal
`experience. "That which is born
of the flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the Spirit .is
spirit. Marvel not that I said
unto thee, Ye must be born
again."
Here's an illustration: Our
great steel mills change pig iron
into steel by a process which
requires intense heat and the
introduction of carbon into the
molten ore, whereby its nature is
changed. It is then called
"steel". It has acquired new
characteristic& It has an innate
hardness — the quality of
resistance which makes it usable
for steel rails, or for razor blades
which will hold an edge. It -'has
an , inborn resiliency which
te makes it suitable for heavy
coiled springs usable under great
locomotives, or, for the finest of
hair springs Necessary for the
finest and smallest wrist watches
worn by the ladies. It has an,
inherent resonance which makes
it usable for gongs with a ring
• for a warning service.
This , transformation or
conversion, of pig iron into steel,
with these new characteristics is
not the result of external
application -or treatment; it is
the result of a change of nature
— a new creation. It is
accomplished by the
'introduction into the old pig
iron nature of a transforming
element, namely carbon.
Just so, the natural man is
transformed, or converted into,
a christian by the introduction
of Ci sr into his innermost self
by, the operation of the Holy"
Spirit. Man's spiritual.. nature,
which was cut off by sin, is thus
reborn within him and he can

again have spiritual life and
communion with. God. It is then
that he becomes a partaker of
the divine . nature, regenerated
and truly a child of God.
, Now some razor°bllades, tools,
springs, gongs have been made to
sell which , were perfect in form
and finish, but with the old pig
iron nature and thus incapable
of taking and holding an edge,
possessing poor resiliency and
hardness. Why?" Because they
have been treated externally
--only, or put through an
educational process to givethem
form and fmish, but outside
treatment, no matter how
complete does not change the
nature or give the essential
quality of steel. ,
By this time you will see the
application of my illustration.
Human ore or unregenerate
human nature can only be
changed by the introduction of
the transforming element, not
carbon, but Christ, and He is
introduced. into human life only
by the Holy Spirit, and that
when the "will" of the natural
man is yielded. For man not
only has a knowledge of good
and evil, as the result of sin, but
he has within himself the power
to choose. Man is the only one
of God's creatures who can
deliberately, from - choice, say
"no" to 'God. But when man
yields, the Spirit of God will
bring him under conviction and
cause him to choose Christ as his
Saviour. ' ,
Therefore religious education,
apart from, the new birth, may
result in giving reform,
refinement and polish' to human
beings; but it cannot transform
the creature into anew creation.
Somewhere in the process there
must come that deliberate
choice, that change wrought by
God upon a willing subject: One
can.. know much about Christ
through the intellectual process,
but one can only know Christ as
Saviour and ,,,,Lord by the new
birth process. Peter recognized
Jesus as the Christ, not by "flesh
and blood" (intelluctual)
process, but by the Father which
is in heaven.
We must comply with the
laws of science in order to get
the blessings of science. So must
we , comply with the
requirements of God's spiritual
laws, if we would have the
blessings of God, for spiritual
things are spiritually discerned.

A number. of Goderich area:

"-are presently travelling through
Western Ontario.
Almost all present braved the
snowstorm Monday evening to,
continue . the discussion with
these entertaining young men at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert

The essence of the. Baha'i
teachings, universal in scope, is
summarized in the following
basic principles: the oneness of
PAUL THE MASTER -BUILDER
In I Cor. 3:10 the Apostle Paul
declares by divine inspiration:
"According to the grace of God
which is given unto me, as a wise
[instructed masterbuilder,-* I
"have laid the foundation, and an-
other
nother buildeth thereon: But let
every man take heed how he
buildeth thereupon."
In what sense was Paul the
master -builder of the Church, and
what "foundation"' did he lay? Did
he not hi=mself say that "other
foundation can no man lay than
that is .laid, which is Christ Je-
sus"? Yes, he did—and in this
very passage! He sought to lay no
other foundation than Christ, but
God had chosen him to proclaim.
Christ in a new way.
Some years previous our Lord
had asked His disciples: "Whom
say ye that 1 am,'and Peter had
instantly replied: "Thou art the
Christ [Messiah], the Son of the
living God" (Matt. 16:16). This is
how believers in general had rec-
ognized _ Him at that time' (John
1:49; 6:69; 11:27; 20:31). Indeed,
the Messianic kingdom was to be
established upon Christ as God's
annointed Son [Messiah means
"annointed"].
But with theraising up of Paul,
God began to form "the Church
which . is Christ's _body-" (Eph.
1:22,23; Col. 1:24,25). This is the
Church of today, and it is
founded, not on Christ as King,
but as the exalted Lord and Head
of the "one body" (I Cor.' 12:13).
Paul does not present Christ as
Messiah, but Lord. In Rom.
10:9 he declares:
"That if thou shalt confess
With thy mouth Jesus as LORD,
and shalt believe in thine heart
that God hath raised Him from
the dead, thou shalt be 'saved."
Again in I Cor. 12:3: "No man
can ,say that Jesus is the LORD;
but by the Holy .Spirit." And again
in Phil. 2:9.11 he declares_ that
God has highly exalted Christ and
given. Him a name above every
name "that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is
LORD, to the glory of God the
Father."
Have you confessed Him as
your Lord and Savior?
