(staff photo) 1 GDCI BY CINDY LEEKING AND NANCY HILLS y.r Five years ago this January, the GDCI Viking Band was formed. It consisted of grade nine students with little " or no musical. background, • Most members could not even lead music. They progressed, year by year, recruiting new members every ,September, and the band now consists of students from grade nine through to grade 13. Every `Monday, Wednesday and Friday at noon, the band practices for half an hour. Them is no musical option at GDCI, so class time is not available. After completing four years with the band, each student receives a plaque, presented by Mr. C. Kalbfleisli, the director. - It has been Mr. Kalbfleish's patience and hard work which has really kept this organization together. In 1968, the, band won an award at the Grey County Music Festival. It has also played, for audiences in Seaforth, Clinton, Walkerton, Chesley, Flesherton, Mount Forest and for other. high, schools in the area. ti Last year, an overnight band tout was organized. This was an enormous success and a lot of fun for all concerned. • In September of this year, quite a number of grade nines joined the band. It is hoped that in the future even more first ' year students -will be willing to give music a chance. "THIS YEAR" The band has a full schedule in mind' for the coming school year. The first band tour is on November 2. The students will be travelling to Norwich District High School and Burford =High School. In January or February, Dresden and one other high school will be the objects of our attention. In April we will be holding a Music Night with Grey Highlands. District -High School. Grey Highlands was our overnight host during our 1970 two-day band tour: In the spring we will be going up north again for another two-day band tour. Every year there is. a Most Valuable Musician Award given to a student in the band. Last year we also presented our conductor, Mr. Kalbfleisch with a pep set to mark our fifth anniversary and show' our appreciation of his work with us. Mr. Kalbfleisch says, "We have a goodcross-section of students this year from all grades and more participation th1 b ever before." We're expecting great things from the band this year. Members of the band are Conductor, Mr. 0 Charles Kalbfleish.
