Doug Pleteh added q touchdown
for Wingham shortly before the
end of the game, and converted
it hft'nself when he ran the ball
into ° the end r zone for two
points.
Strong wind conditions forced
the Vikings to stay on the
ground more than usual, but
when they did go to the air,
Tom Crawford threw the ball
well, and Bruce Fisher made
several good „catches.
Offensively, the blocking of Al
Pirie, Al Drennan and Kirk
Lyndon • aided the Viking
backfielders to pick up a total of
437 yards, compared to
Wingham's 183 yards. Drennan
and Brian Westbrook ..led the
Viking defensive effort.
Penalties again hurt the
Vikings, and were largely
responsible for setting up
Wingham's scoring plays.

Vikings established four records

Soccer championship
SOCCER BY T.D.
The GDCI Senior Soccer team
won the Huron -Perth
championship last week,
defeating Mitchell by a total,
score of 7 -1 - in. .a two -game series,
for the title. The first game,
played in Mitchell saw the local
squad emerge with a 3-1 victory.
Bill Stemp opened the scoring
at the five minute mark when he
scored- on a corner kick. Mitchell
had several breakaways in the
next 15 minutes, but were
unable to score
With their point 'totals .at
conclusion of the sehedule, The
315 points they scdlred represent
a ,new .league record :and a new
school record for points. The
Ow points they yielded on the
season is also a new league and
school record for defensive play.
Coach Wayne Horner, with '•
regard to the nine points scored
by Wingham., commented,
"Unfortunately, we have heard
more comments on the nine
points than we have had on the
offensive ,accumulation and the
all around good 'game that we
played."
He went on to point out,
however, that the ending of their
shutout string may be a good
thing for the Vikings in that it
will relieve the pressure on them
going into the playoffs. "It
would have been a psychological
burden," he said. "Now we can
forget about the points scored
against us, and start to play our
patterned game."
.Looking ahead to the
Stratford gariie, Horner sees
them as "a big team that likes to
throw". "If the game is anything
like last years' semi-final with
them _it should be interesting,"
he said. That reference was to
the rough play that featured last
years game between the same
two teams.
