f $I NAL.SDAitt UR DAY,
BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER
Reeve Harbtd , Robinson,
Howick, asked members of the
Huron County executive
committee Friday , afternoon
why it had not recommended to
concur with a resolution from
,a the County of Perth to abolish
County Boards of EducationL
"I think it is regrettable,"
stated Robinson.
Chairman. Jack Alexander, told
him his committee had felt that
since them county boards of
education had been. established
at considerable ekpense, "they
should have a chance".
Reeve James Ha3fter, Stephen,
reminded council - that if
ratepayers felt the costs of
education were too high, they
• would. have an opportunity very
shortly to elect new board
members whom they felt would
keep to closer eve ori, expenses.
Charles . Thomas, reeve `of
Grey, said he had been receiving
some complaints which should
have gone to the school board.
."I'm just not sure that the
county school board is working
very well when this"• happens,"
added Thomas.
Q
Robinson stated that since the
• Perth 'resolution had been
introduced, there was an
investigation planned into the
a,.
workings of the Perth County
Board of,Fducation,.
Walter Sheardown,
deputy -reeve of Goderich, asked °
the committee to explain its
reasoning for not concurring
with a Goderich Town Council °
resolution to .shave welfare
assistance administered by the
province.
•
. Alexander answered that, the
committee had not wanted to
give 'the province "another
foothold".
`Sheardown noted thatwelfare
assistance cases in Goderich had
risen from 38 in August to 53 in
September.
"It is over -taxing our staff at
the town hall," Sheardown
stated. "That was the reason for
the resolutiod."
In other.. business, council
learned that salaries paid to the
secretarial staff have been
reviewed and a new schedule will
be in effect in°1971. There was
no, indication in the report as to
the terms of the schedule except
to note that sick leave credits
will - be adjusted from one day to
one and one half clays per month
effective January 1,1971. -
In the future, -all secretarial
staff being 'engaged by the
county department will be
channelled through "one person
and one person only".
This policy is set,out only to
retain uniformity among this
particular section of the county
staff, the report concluded.
