The Ladies Legion Auxiliary

October- 13, with 22 members
present.
It was decided to have an
entry in the .christnuis Parade
December 5.
The ladies wilt again this year
be selling tickets on a Christmas
Cake draw with three cakes as

A wreath has been ordered for
the November 11 services, and

Mrs. Russell Needham, RR 2 Ripley, had a di ay of hooked
rugs at Christmas Country' Fair, Carlow, last w k that set the
hearts of many admirers a -flutter. Mrs. Needham here shows
the family crest which she worked and framed for her own
home but many other rugs were available to hooked rug lovers.
Mrs. Needham had many inquiries about her work, she said.

things are my own design but some of them are copies with an
added touch. 'Like these candlesticks — I copied the basic,
design and added the handles."
When he isn't just certain how something will come out on
the. lathe, Jack will experiment with a piece of pine or some
other inexpensive wood. '
-- _ - The -•lovely -bowls on Jack's -table Were -his -pride and _joy.
"At $35 or $40 I'm not Making any money," Jack mused
rubbing his hand around and around the edge of the. fruit bowl
on -tiny' legs. "This. was made by, glueing blocks of various
woods- together.and..then turning Stop 1helathe It takes hours
and hours. But 'love to do it. This is really_what T love to do."
This year was Jack's third at the Christmas Country Fair.
"I've been to other craft shows,',', said Jack, "but I think this
is the best one:"
Why?
"Maybe it is the time ofyear,," offered Jack."It•is held with
Christmas in mind. Or maybe it is the surroundings. This is a
great place for arrevent like this."

with holly and filed with Yule Logs. ,
Yule. logs are those marvellous hand -made pieces of fuel for
a fireplace which give off colored flames when' burned. They
are made from newspapers and other scrap papers rolled
tightly together and soaked in'various solutions to give various
colored flames when set ablaze. -=7-4
Mrs. Cooke said hers were soaked in a solution of bluestone'
and coarse salt. - but there are other solutions you can use.
She promised to send a copy of her recipe to Signal -Star
readers.
One thing Mrs. Cooke did point out about yule log making
was most interesting. She said that if colored magazines and
comie•°'papers are ,used exclusively in the yule logs,' they will
give off colors when they -burn even though they haven't been
soaked*in a special solution!
The rope dolls fashioned by Mrs. Cooke were quite a hit
with the teenage girls. They feature hippy -type costumes and
ong,_skinny rope legs and arms. Youngsters like to hang them
on their walls as kooky decorations which are so 'in' these
days.
But the push-up dolls - those little $1 dolls on a stick were
the biggest sellers: Mrs. Cooke sold almost all of them'she had
on Wednesday.
They featured tiny dolls which popped up something like a
jack-in-the-box when you pushed the handle. Pull the handle
dl<iwn and the doll disappeared again.
"I'11 be making some more of everything," said Mrs. Cooke,
"but with the fall bazaar coming up and Christmas ..'. it might
be a while before I can fill ahy orders."
People didn't seem to mind. Mrs. Cooke's colorful display
was a winner and her toys had captured the hearts of most
everyone whoattended.

told me, is anyone under the age

I- tried to explain to her that
the editorial was directed most
particularly to women because it
was contained in the women's
section of the newspaper. I told
her that I was positive men
would also read it (I have proof
of that statement because I had
a call from one man who wanted
to commend the writer for such
a true assessment of the
situation) but that didn't seem
to appease my caller in the least.
In actual fact, I did think
about calling it "editorial
comment for parents" but I
quickly abandoned ' that.. idea
when I remembered that not all
adults involved with the youth
centre are necessarily `parents'
