Fifth year eat moit ; rccessful
Bean
One of the newest and :mpst
successful. annual venture
Huron County is the 4nirieh
. Bean Festival. Saturday's e4ition
was the fifth and most rewarding
to date• `: with about 1Q,000
people in attendance.' . •
It was a hurry crowd top,
for they ate almost one ton of
baked beans despite scattered.
showers throughout. most of the
afternoon and some ` of . the
evening,
Plates of beans, ham, coleslaw
and' buttered bread sold for $1
each, About 5,000'persons sat 'at
picnic tables in the village streets
to consume their meals. Many
more purchased cartons of
baked beans at 25 cents each
and carried them home for
snacking.
The recipe; for the beans is an
old Gernian one but nobody
seems to know for certain where
it originated.
The- beans are first boiled in
revolving steel drums and then
placed in specially made pans
which "are lowered into seven
refrigerators which have been
converted into cookers. „ -
From there 1 they are
transferred into large iron kettles
which hang on tripods over open
fires in the street.
The festival is sponsored by
the Zurich,and District Chamber
of Commerce. It was originally
patterned after the Elmira
Maple 'Syrup , Festival and is
designed p. promote the sale of
white bans whieh are grown in
the Zurich ,area.
Many visitors,, especially those
from cities in Southern Ontario
and the United„ States, enjoy the
tours to 'the bean fields tosee
the crops growing. •
This year, special bus tours
ended up at a„ duplication of the
television farm, Green Acres,
There, local ' residents took the
parts of thr" story characters.
Even Oliver Wendall Douglas was
there, climbing a pole to answer
the telephone: '
Arnold Ziffle, the pig, was at
the farm but was penned up for
the day!
Other features of the one -day
festival were a rummage sale,
pony races, a bean_ . queen
contest, horseshoe pitching; a
kiddie midway and • booths
selling maple syrup, homemade
' bake goods, bean crocks;• quilts,
fruit; vegetaables, meats and
bazaar -type items.
Some of the more popular
booths were the,pie stalls where
every.. kind of homemade pie was
Customers were lined up on Zurich streetsSM'turday to buy containers of baked beans for 25 cents
each. The beans were cooked in seven old refrigerators ,Iying on, their backs, stripped of their
cooling systems and fitted with heating elements. They were then transferred into these large iron
kettles suspended over a fire on a tripod. ('staff photo)

baby may be over -dressed rather
than under -dressed. Their
heating system is better
developed . at birth than the
cooling system and babies need
more help to keep cool in hot
"weather than to keep warm at
ordinary_ room temperature.
Everything bought for the
baby• should be machine
washable and dryable and
require no ironing. ' Clothing
should be easy to put on and
take off. Too , much , fuss . in
changing and dressing a baby can
make him irritable.
In 1 your tplanning, the most
basic need is diapers. Consider
first of ' all whether or not you
will use ' a diaper service. This is
much' more expensive but it is
certainly more convenient. It

One of the handiest garments
you could have for a baby is

playsuits .or coveralls. You can
use at least six' of these•. but„as
they are a popular gift, the
article suggests that two gift;

Quality is important because the
suits are used constantly. The
fabric should be very thick and
stretchy and without, collars.
Babies have very short necks and
sleepers • with collars are
uncomfortable. There are many
fancy sleeper sets on the market '
but for the same price, the plain
ones are usually better quality.

Despite a steady drizzle .Saturday afternoon and evening, -an estimated 10,000 persons crowded
into Zurich -•for the fifth, annual' Bean Festival. Picnic tables in the streets were set. up to
accommodate about "6,000 people who enjoyed places of baked beans, ham, coleslaw and buttered
bread. Some stayed dry under umbrellas like those, diners in this photo.,; Qthers wore rain hats and
coats. Some just took their, chances on the weather. (staff photo)
