It will be even more unlikely in future. A new amendment banning these air -cushioned ve- hicles from Ontario highways has been passed, by the provin- cial legislature. The futuristic -sounding amendment, introduced in the House on June 19 by Transport minister Irwin, Haskett is actual- ly based . on sound manufactur- ers' estimates that the number of air -cushioned vehicles will ''.lhetease dramatically Within a - very few years. "These vehicles would create obvious hazards to traffic patterns and traffic safe- ty if- they were permitted on our highways," said Transport min- ister Irwin Haskett in introduc- ing the new amendment. "The. ° new section to the Highway Traffic Actis intended to avert this before it should occur." , Another amendment introduc- ed at, ' the same time provides for the adoption of new "Walk" and "Don't Walk", symbol signs `for pedestria - (seed iiiustrattotr below) which Will replace the printed directions on our cur- • II1111111111IIIIII11111111III11111I rent traffic signals. "These are further examples of the encour- agement we are giving to the use of symbols , . . with particu- lar reference to the multi-lingual factor," said Mr. Haskett. Another n e w amendment prohibits the sale of new cars which, do not• conform with. federal safety standards. . This broadens the scope of the new safety standards law, since the federal government's constitu- tional jurisdiction in this area is limited to international and in- terprovincial Fommerce. One amendment . proposed will -have considerable signifi- cance for the trucking industry. It allows axle weight on com- mercial vehicles to be increased from the present 18,000 lbs. to 20,000 lbs. for 1971 registra- tions, "without unduly affecting the maintenance cost of high- ways or traffic safety require- ments." Repeal of proof of financial responsibility in relation to driv- er licence suspension was an- other arnendrnent' introduce -d -for the consideration of the legis- lature. - • Karen McGregor, one of the members of : the Mary Lynne Telford- School of Dancing, Ggderich, put on a .solo display with the Flora MacDonald Sunday during the weekly band concert ,.at . With machine'satetjr and maintenance becoming" increasingly important, . buyers should know as much as possible about the • various types available, says Professor Ross irwin, School of Engineering,. University of Guelph. • There are both advaritagesifid disadvantages to an electric lawn mower, says Professor Irwin. They are lighter in weight than machines powered by gas, and • there is no gas or oil to buy to add to the operating ,costs. Moreover, little maintenance is required and the machines start easily, which is a help for elderly people or those who must take things 'easy.,The. electric mower is very pracival for use on small lawns. The disadvantages of the electric machine are that the - trailing electric • cord is a nuisance, and the machine will overload, in heavy grass, and may tend to overheat or burn out. A three -wire cord should be used ' to prevent possible shocks, especially in wet grass, says Professor Irwin. Most electric 'lawn mowers have 1 or. 11/2 horsepower motors, and two 9 -inch cutting blades or a single blade is the • general rule.
