It would appear that rabies
will continue to pose a potential
4 • hazard to dogs and cats in. Huron
County. In order to alleviate, at
least in part, this hazard it has
been decided that the Canada
Department of Agriculture,
Health of Animals Branch, in
co-operation with the ''Huron
N County Health- Unit, will again
conduct free anti -rabies
vaccination clinics for dogs and
cats in this county. The clinics

area.
Confirmed cases of -rabies in
animals continued at a relatively.
high level in Huron. County in
_tending :-
March 31, 1970.
Rabies cases involving both
domestic, and wild animals
totalled 69. for the 12 -month
period: This is 20 less than in the
previous year.
Huron, County continues to
be among the counties. of
Ontario with a higher incidence
'of rabies.. The wild life
population, with an increased
"number of skunks in the area,
indicates that the occurrence of
r
rabies will increase during the
'next 12 -month ,period. Skunks
and foxesare the two main
groupsof animals which spread ”
rabies from wild life to our
domestic animals, and for this
reason any unusual actions , in
these . animals should be treated
with . extreme caution. Contact
between these animals and
domestic animals or humans
• should immediately be reported
to the area Health of Animals
Branch in order that proper
action may be taken to eliminate
further spread of the disease.
Rabies is a virus.disease which
affects the central nervous
system of animals and humans.
The__symptoms produced by the
•disease vary fromt incident to
incident, but, by and large, all
animals .behave in a peculiar,
manner and attempt to attack
other animals and thus
propagate the disease, as live
"Virus is frequently found in the
saliva of infected animals. The
disease is usually fatal if proper
evasive action is not taken prior
to -the beginning of symptoms of
the disease.
