How aboutthe beautiful
weather for our holiday& last.
Monday! I hope you enjoyed,it
as much as I did. I know it was a
bit windy for small craft at the
harbour but for such festivities
• as the goings on in Kincardine
Old Horne Week and our own
1000 Lawn' Rowling Tournament
a great many people really
enjoyed it. •
believe sixty pairs of bowlers
turned out and the local,
_merchants turned in some fine
• prizes for them. I was wishing
some of those merchants would
just stroll thro' the club and hear
some of the nice remarks that
were made about their gifts. It is
surely a great bit of advertising.
One of our clubs spryest
• bowlers - and I believe the
oldest - Pete Bisset - received a
great hand when he claimed one
of the tOp pries. Peter is know'
from one end of Ontario to the
other for- his fine bowling over -
the great many years he has been
a top bowler. Great going, Pete, •
we wish you many, manyniore
'tournaments.
It was Wonderful to see so
many bowlers frOm so many
distant towns. It is also a feather
in the local clubs' cap as they
have such fine greens and this
tournament always has such '
good prizes.
I have had so many people tell
me they were glad I brought up
the - subject of our crawling
eapedemic of earwigs. Shirley has
-done some theeking-lot: us
hoW
are we going to get some
ACTION on it? It -just seems
e v e ry one has been so
,complacent about these pests
until they sudden reake,„,vve
are being overrun by therfitif
* they still , won't say or do
anything about it. If I hadn't
moved to this end of town I
' 'Probably wouldn't' have said
anythinefor another year or so,
since I hadn't seen too many of
them until now. But now that I

see them and hear ofthern from
everyone tn.such a large area -
I'm wally pset and want to see
some action against them - Orj$
it like the locust plague, you jti,st
put up with them?
,To go back to Lawn Bowling
- this summer the Provindial
Tournament , or contehts were
held right here in Goderich.
There are the trials for single,
double and trebles and the
winnerS g on to other ,areas or
districts to conipete, until we
have champions chosen for
Ontario.
The singles winner was our
own Edna Overholt, (Mrs.
Francie). Doubles - or pairs
were won by Mrs. May Habkirk
and lead, Mrs. Janet Ford, of
Seaforth. Trebles vinners were
our own fine bowlers Ellen
Allison -(Mrs. Earl) Mae
Richardson (Mrs. Fred) as lead
and Marg (Mrs. Harry)
Shackelton who viced.
These ladies go to Stratford
this aturday for the second
stage of the playdowns against
winners from the other districts.
I will let you know how they
make out but for now we can
only wish thein "Lots. of Luce.
For some reason I don't seem
4ol,' have many special dates for
August": There ,was a big day for
the local artists who went' to the
Southampton Art School .
Aug. 4' -for a very pleasant day.
The Art School is once again
under the capable-aisanagement
of lane ot our _oartEartists- Edna
-Johnston:41nd- she _has_a frne _list
of visiting artist -teachers during
the summer months. There is a
very pleasant and relaxing'
atmosphere about ,this charming
school and I just wish I was
-16.tgil'932L188/et free to take
advantage of theiir fine teaching.
Perhaps we can pin Edna down
to 'our district some day - but
you know, how it. is - you can
always do better in a_ distant
town or city than, in your home
town.

If you want to sell your
paintings you need tolake them
out of town, since people who
know you wouldn't be bothered
buying from local artists. Even,
lopalmerchanti. I hear, uriset
some ,people by paying the big
price : for visiting artists work.'
. This is probably a reflection on
local work.- I don't know - but
I do know they feel that because
they have known the 'artist for
years, they should get a Painting
-
for praCtically nothing. - and so
it goes,.
Some day we are going to
take a large display of local
artists work to the city or
another town and sell the lot of
them - then won't you be sorry
you didn't buy that nice
painting you admired but can go
around any time to the artists
home to gaze at?
: You should start collecting
some -of these local paintings as
you know there is some nice
work being done t'now. Your
grandchildren may some day be
proud to own paintings by
Goderich artists. Weren't you
surprised -.and pleased - with
the collection, of local work
during Art Mart Week? I hope
you were and we are very -
happy and proud to have our
paintings displayed right here in
town. Come to think of it -
(will you?) there is a great
variety of talent in this area and
you should be a proud owner -of
some °fit.

THE LIVING GOD.
"My soul thirsteth for God, for
the living -God" (Pse. 42:2).
The modern "God is dead" ,
theory has little true ,comfort or
satisfaction .for men in trouble or
sorrow. • "
For years we supposed that the I
term "the living , God," in .• the
above passage, had reference to I
God's power to help, in contrast
down, a dee'r.might well pant for
streams of running watei.._
Be this as it may, the stag, in
this passage, is not seeking for
help; he .is thirsting for refresh-
ment and so does the psalmist
iong for the refreshment of fel-
lowship with God, the living'God,
, How wonderful it is that vie
' May know the living God through
to the impotence *of dead heathen1
idols. A careful examination of the
context, however, leads us to be-
lieve that it has rather to do with
His...ability to reipond. The gods.
of the heathen, by• contrast, were
like children's dolls:. they could
not even change their cOunte
nonce or respond ib any way.
"The idols of the heathen are
silver, and gold, the work of n-,ien's
hands. , .
"They have ears, but theyIhear
not; neither is there anybreath
in their mouths" (Psa. 135;15-17).
But the true God is a Irving
God. He does see, hear and re-
spond, The psalmist in Psalm 42.
compares himself lb a 'stag, pantr-
ing. with'Airst. it is sometimes
supposed that the scene is one•of
a stag pursued in the chase, but
faith in Christ! Indeed, He bids
; men come into His p_resence and
commune with Him in view of*
that fact that Christ died to take
away the barrier, of sin. This is,
why the Apostle PAI declares in
Heb. 10:19:
• -
"HOving therefore, brethren,
boldness to enter into the holiest
by the blbothof Jesus, a new and,
living way, which He hath conse-
crated for us through the veil, that
is to say, His flesh." '
In other words, by His death at
Calvary our LOrd tore away the
veil that Tkept us from entering
into God's presence, and now in
response to our need His Word
says:
"Let us therefore come. boldly
unto the throne of grace, that we
may obtain mercy, and find grace

anything but "an old man's

game calling for a skilful and
calculated delivery and
subsequent placement of every
bowl under their direction.
