HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1970-07-09, Page 19Selecting the right pattern is
the first "step in creating your
fashion.. After seeing what 'your
friends are • currently •wearing,
4 and following the 'IN' designs in
magazines and shop windows,
you have your likes and dislikes
pretty well established.
Don't follow the dictates of
the latest fashion, unless that
fashion will _do something for
you. 'What looks absolutely
ravishing oil a 20 year-old could
well look positively devastating
on a 4Q -year-old. Look for lines
acid styles, that dramatize yolk
strong points, and detract from
your weak ones. 'The, eye has -a
tendency toollow a line, so use
the lines of the pattern to take
people's eyes where you, want
them. Vertical lines give the
illusion of tallness, and can slim
a heavy figure or feature.
Horizontal lines make the eye
move from side to side, and
makes a heavy set person appear
even more. so. Horizontal lines
can also be used to break up a
tall thin figure, and give it more
body.
A full skirt falling from a
fitted waistline, can fill out small
hips, and give the larger waistline

problem, or focus the attention.
elsewhere.
Consider where you will be
wearing your garment, and
choose a pattern for practibility
and wearability. If you already
have th0 fabric, be sure to
purchase a pattern that suits the
fabric design, ' texture , and
weight. • -..
A word to the beginning
beginners. Try something simple
first. Look for an tasy to make
pattern, and use easy to handle,
Material.
Pattern sizes are based on
actual body ;measurements.. The
amount of ease will vary with
the style and manufactt rer.
Generally; your pattern size
will be one or two Sizes larger
than you takeJn ready to wear.
Select 'your , pattern by ,bust
measurement, as it , is easier to
adjust the waist and hips, than
the bust and shoulders.
It, the bust is larger in
proportion than -•• _the other
measurements, - take- a chest
measurement. If the ' difference
between chest and bust is four
inches or more, get your pattern
one size smaller than the'bust
measurement, , and enlarge it
through the bust. The smaller a
size is best, as good fit through
shoulders arid 'armholes is
important -and that area should
be changed as little as possible to
retain shape'afidfit-
If only the bust is large in
proportion to the rest of your
body, and you' prefernot to
alter the v .•bustline, buy two
patterns, one by buntline, the
other one size smaller. Use only
the bodice' front 'of the _larger ...
pattern. Inerease the darts at
waistline, underarm and
shoulder, so the front and b§,ck
seam lines are of equal length.
For skirts, buy by the waist
measurement. If. you have very
full hips,. buy by the hip
measurement, as the waistline is
• easier to alter.
For pants, ' rise the - hip
measurement.
Always buy the same size
pattern for coats, suits and
m dresses. .
