4 4 .y i' •d.a ilipp w Round.. and AbO t° With Murti This just HAS to bt ROSES week! With flower show exhibits and movies, slides and paialtngs this weekend, I should think it was the right week to catch, the rose at its peak of perfection. But so many seem to think they will have trouble getting one or more for this Saturday as they are either opening too soon or too .late. And another thing, there are so many .rules -and regulations that it will indeed be difficult to have a single flower qualify. The 'best will be there at North St. 'United Church Hall along with displays of other beautiful flowers. I can understand why people spend so much' time and love and money on their rose gardens. You just have to see, ' these gardens to appreciate all the T.Q.C. that goes into thhm. There is also frustration and. disappointment!. I visited a few lovely gardens and you, too;are weleome;td do the same. I can't begin to name all of them but I can. tell you this --anyone who has a large garden (whether • flowers and/or vegetables) is happy and pleaded to have you wander' thru' • and enjoy the "fruits of. their labour." • At Cambria Road and Trafalgar • St. the Hugills have a real show place and there must be over 100 rose bushes. Her "Flame" climber is, old fashioned, beautiful and very showy. Nora Hugill spends hours • and hours with her beautiful BAYFIELD ROAD GODERICH 524-7711 DINING And DANCING FRIDAY & SATURDAY _711lNE.26.$_27 THED1MDIS1ONS NIGHILY.. Of coturse they are only vegetables but .1 think, they are beautiful too! She has over 90'bushes of 'name' roses . -- . and they are outstanding: She -also has some oldies, one of -which took a first. at the show last year: Some of them am , old enough to haire perfume and, tnatalone endears therrr to me. (usually an old primrose)., The new hybrids are fantastic in color and size --• but;' 'I still have to sniff at them - and that sets them down a bit in my book. I always look to see how the many new homes are handling the gardening situation: ¢.It's amazing how many are too busy or just plain don't care- -for flowers. Their neat lawns and hedges are really nice - and very showy too. They probably spend as much time fussing with the plain greenery as some people do with their splashes of color. So -- to each his own. At- the end ' of Wilson Street you can enjoy a beautiful little park, colorful gardens and fine homes. Some are very formal and proper. The Menzies have a beautiful setting - and , their roses and canterbury Bells are fabulous. I had • never before noticed that so often the top 'bell' on the bush can be the size of a teacup. .It is several ----fiowerettes-or retsswhich-have .w sutlderrl} 3dined--gater -tO come out as , a single %flower. Siamese flowers. I enjoyed seeing Paul and Marys' garde And felt right at home- in-itrf'hei_r•--garden show&• that they .love ALL the flowers and just 'have to have some of ,--everything in their flowerbeds 'r° got a kick out of, a huge, fantastic onion vieing with -the tall . spikes of heavenly blue for a place to show off. I can .just imagine Paul leaving it there because. the crazy' twists and turningsof a targe. onion ° In bloom is really out of this world! Modernistic. Dot Shaw next door had some lovely roses, one large • black velvet one opens to a beautiful deep red' rose. Her Flaming, Peace rose keeps its color from bud to fall bloom, as does the Super Star Tropicana. A. beautiful tiny orange rose grows to a full blown orangy coral, calor. This was her „"Woburn• Abbey" rose --' (he' most disease resistant one in the garden °and a' pleasure to cultivate., A tiny brilliant cad -yellow one turns to a large pinky red. and is the Rumba Rose. Appropriately, named, I would say. As well' as her flowers I enjoyed seeing a fantastic ' old three storey tree house still in the old apple tree. , That really made my day! I thought r I was the only sentimental gal'Lin Goderich! The band stand is coming along nicely at West St Park for the band concerts.: I can also See,_ our cute Highland • flingers treating •us to their beautiful dancing on that same stage providing some one donates a decent floor for it! - How is the bicycle. club coming along Ralph? I've sort of lost touch the last few weeks, but I am happy to see se Many grown-ups on their bikes. We are waiting to' see if our .:se uicelubs. are going .,to :help _make :Art ,;:Mart>.. Week. the.' `T3oderieh Week so ° many' Lave hoped for. We do need these groups - as groups - to help fill' i>6}the early part of the July 13. to 18 week. Art Mart has really u made a mark for Goderich — so if you want it any bigger YOU .,°have -to help. . There is the flower . show Saturday afternoon. ' The Industrial Soft Ball League Party and Dance - Saturday nite at the Pay., Lionel Thornton and his ,Orchestra. Great! I was glad to hear the • young folks are doing well with their youth centre. About 50 of them turned out to help with the "scrub out". and paint up and everyone a willing worker. I think Gordie McManus deserves a special vote of thanks for all he is doing for the kids - also the town merchants - many of them and ,other lnterestec.1 folks who .will be heard of later, - the Rec.
