REV. ROBERT RAYIVIONT
North Street United Church
he church nobody wants
It is .difficult for' those within°
and, beyond the Church to adjtot
to the "secular cowV." How long
ago .was. it that a than put his life
on the 'line by criticizing the
Church? Today it is the fashion.
Albert H; .n den Heuvel tells
us: "The G -.rch, paralyzed and
mUte because of her divided
state, is humiliated because she
is neither what she professes to
be nor what she is told (by the
New Testament). to • be."
• Another spoonful of criticism
comes from Helmut Thielicke:
• "In order to be able to form a'
judgment concerning ' the,
Church's credibility we would
"• have to know'whether Christians
live, whether they really `exist',
in the house of the Gospel they
proclaim." Then of course we
could add, for the sake of
flavour, the whole fork full
contributed by Pierre Berton's
"The Comfortable Pnw.",
Listen to the thunder of
applause., How many there are in
our community who happily
join in this chorus of Church
prophets of alt ages since the
voice of Amos first rang out: to
challenge their contemporaries
critics. ; Here is the than who
wants to use his . free time
exclusively in "sporting events.
Over there . is the woman who
needs adulation. ,She will use her
.talents in ways that allow a `spot,
light' reward.. Everywhere you,
look are people joyously
comtpitigg their income to ,the
fulfillment of selfish desires and
interests. See the whole host of
people who are ready' to sing`,„
their `Amen' to the pate of
criticisms' of the. Church. What
better way • to escape • a
confrontation between my
desires and a call to greater
heights of giving to others than
to mute the voice of the church.
But wait a minute. Are we
overlooking something here. Are
those. who readily , leave the
Church behind , as are irrelevant
institution out of the past really
hearing the criticism? What is
the purpose of the modern
prophet's words? - The van den
Heuvels, the Thielickes, and all
the others --why do they speak?
For the same reason as the
