Woman to Woman
With, summer vacation for
school children only* about one
.h onth away now, my mind has
started to whirl towards the time
when the local swimming pool .
and wading pool will be opened
again fpr the warm weather.
Howeve, it has come to my
attention that there is a very real
danger that the pool may not
• remainopen all season this
summer because of an outmoded
filtration system.
The Department of Health in
Huron County keeps a pretty
' sharp eye on everything which
could affect the wellbeing of
cou_ my residents. New legislation
i& pending which could render
the local pool "unfit' , for
swimmers. Although it is not
known exactly what date the
new rules will be 'effective, the
Goderich Recreation and
Community Centre Board has a
copy of the new regulations.
In fact, members of the
Goderich Recreation and
Community Centre Board have
petitioned:7t9w rteuncil .frmthe.. "
necessary funds"`'fanittvette Ne>91 '
into top working order before
the swimming season opens. It
had been hoped °to prevent any
disappointment that might occur
if the swimming pool would be
closed down mid-season because
the present filtration system quit
(that's a real . likelihood, -4 I
understand) or the new
regulations forced the pool to
Close.
Town council decided, not to
appropriate t`he money to put
the pool ` in Shape% To. make
matters even worse, there are
rumors flying in every direction
that thepool could be closed
permanently , because there is
some unhappiness in certain
quarters abq.it the annual costs
to keep the pool in operation.
,Even the little wading,pool is
a in a - precarious position. Last
year, you +will remember if you
are a mother with small children,
the wading pool was closed for
cleaning at least, twice a day. I
recall it seemed that every time I
took our youngest t the park,
the wading pool was being
scrubbed. This meant that I had
W field a good many
unanswerable from my littleaboy
as : to why he couldn't go
swimming when I had promised
him he could. -
It seems that the wading pool
needs a filtration system.
Incidentally, mothers, the
filtration system which • was
originally purchased for the
wading pool, has never been put
into .operation. Now, it too is
outmoded but it can be
converted to do the job
residents who reason ° th
because I'm not a Heti'
resident of this town, .1 shouldn't
have quite so much to say about
things going on here.
In fact, this truth was
brought to light at a recent
meeting of the Homemaker
Service Exploratory Committee
when members were looking for
someone : to act on, the Goderich.
Community Homemaker Service
committee:
It was thought that it would
be a wise thing to have at least
one .member of a three-member
committee who was a longtime
resident of Goderich. There just
wasn't anyone at the meeting
who really qualified in that
capacity who was willing to act,
What to do?
' Well, two members of the
committee—the chairman, A. G.
Barber and one committee
member, me—were selected from
the newcomers to act• on the
committee. The third member is
Mrs,_ Esther Ross of the

Mrs. Ross was approached after
`the -meeting and graciously
agreed to help out.
Someone at that meeting
.made the remark'ihat being tie*
in Goderich was a definite
advantage. It wasn't really made
clear just why; that is considered
to be` so. Perhaps it has
something to do 'with the old
saying, "You stand too close to
the forest to see the trees". ° ,

However,. we feel the proposed

"One concern which is
expressed does not lie within the

Government. 'to adjust—we are
anxious that the lower levels of
government will not` alter fee
structures under their formulae
so that the benefit of the tax
relief is dissipated in fees rather
than accruing to the parents.
This relief :.is intended for the
benefit of the parents, not, for
the benefit of municipal and
provincial authorities. ,
`!Undoubtedly, such
legislation will : increase the
demand for day' -care. This will'
mean the expansion of such
services, and, in the long run, an
improved standard of day care
services and more available
programmes to meet , the
demand.
