"You win a few- and.you lose
a lot," was -the only comment
Albert (Ab.).. Leonard had to
make as he surveyed the last
empty net being hauled aboard
his fishing. tug one Wednesday
morning recently..
An employee, Pete Rutledge
agreed; "Those are the odds in
this business;" he said,
Ab and Pete, who have been
commercial fishing out of
Goderrch harbour , for many
years, had .every right to be
. disappointed with . the catch of
whitefish, this sea$on.
tial
In three sets for this once
common commercial fish in" -
Lake Huron, ,they have only
netted five.
They were fishing in about` 15
fathoms of water about eight,
miles off shdre and about four
miles south of Goderieh.

the Signal -Star aboard, had
chugged out of the harbour
shortly before 7 a,m.
Propelled by a 150 h.p. gas
engine, the 43400t steel -hulled
tug was at the fishing grounds In
slightly less than an hour.
Even though Lake Huron was
blanketed by dense fog, there':
was no delay in finding the buoy
marker.
A b an'd Pete had set `Six boxes
of nets the day before.. o'in .
there, was- slightly more than
mile of mesh in the lake as each
box contained five nets, each
measuring 180 feet..
Although not expecting an
abundance of whitefish, (Ali
stated the catch was getting
smaller every season) they were
hopeful of catching more than
five -odd pounds of smelt and
two "sheepheads."
Pete dismissed the bass -like
sheep heads as "junk" fish.
"Cat -Food," he called • them.
The smelt, usually°considered
worth woing after by sports
fishermen, didn't rate much
higher in Pete's estimation.
"It only takes one of them to
snarl the mesh and you spend
'five minutes sometimes,
untangling it," grumbled Pete.
On the return trip, Lake
Huron's shoreline still remained
completely hidden by the mist

hanging over the water,,,
The foghQrm at the ::harbour
mouth could be heard but its
location was difficult to judge as
each time it blew, the sound
seemed to come from a different
ciirection;
When Ab estimated his.
distance to be about a mile, from
shore he reduced speed and
wasted in slowly,
Suddenly the south
breakwater- loomed ahead, only
100 feet away.
After Snaking a, sharp turn to
port, Ab found the harbor
entrance without difficulty; 1.

The camp, located on the east..

camp's facilities, Students and
instructors , are . _ trained in
Albacores. Water, safety is a key
part • of the course and the,
beginners wilt be forced to spill
their 15 -foot craft.
The students will spend about
eight hours .a day on the water
and attend workshop sessions
conducted by George S.
Hamilton, Paul Henderson and
Stuart Green, , Ojympic 'racing
veterans. Cost .of the seminar is

REMEMBER.
Pete Rutledge who works with Ab Leonard aboafd a fishing tug, stows the nets after one day on
Lake Huron. The day wasn't a particularly good one; but Pete is philosophical about it.
