time a, post visit discussion was

In the 1969 addition to St
M. ry's aln open 'area was
included. It is a lenge open
spaced room .capable of handling,
four normal sized m classes
together. Its features consist of
wall-to-wall '' carpeting with no
walls between the claea. At the
present time =St 'Aviary's open
area. houses,the'pritnary division
of the students..' or what, one.

This flexibility is particularly
evident ,where various, types of
"grouping tprocedures.are used •for
instructional purposes.. The open
area can easily °adapt to on. e large
mass lessors with one teacher
Instructing all of the 'children or
it can be used in a manner
whereby several 'small groups .of

independently in several
.differentareas at the same time.
The tables are rectangular in
shape and capable of
accommodating up to three
students: They can be placed
together in..a. variety of patterns
in order to .facilitate larger
groups such as six, nine, one
dozen or more students. Rather
than . anindividual desk
container for each child's
instructional supplieg as has been
the traditional 'furnishing, each
student is provided with a plastic
tote tray that he takes with him
whereever he goes. The tote
trays fit into a shelf beneath
each table, In this way the child
is not tied to a home station
since his own tote boy... is.. his

there last week. Miss. Carla Reigling shows thg workings of a
